Ladies Drop Double-Header at SDSU

BROOKINGS, S.D.-The Centenary softball team gave up two early leads in both games, falling in its double-header, 12-11 in eight innings in Game 1 and 10-4 in Game 2 to South Dakota State on Friday afternoon.

The Ladies fell to 9-31 overall and 3-16 on the season with the two losses.

Game 1: South Dakota State 12, Centenary 11 (8 innings)

Freshman Callie Herrington belted her first home run of the season and drove in four runs on a 1x3 effort to lead the Ladies at the plate.

Junior Bonnie Matak (2x2, 2 R) and senior Allison Shepperd (2x5, R, RBI) each had two hits, while sophomore Kalyn Harris (1x3, R, 3 RBI) drove in three. Freshman Kelsey Regan (1x4, R, 2 RBI) plated two on a hit, while sophomore Katie Matthews (1x5, RBI), junior Sara Dornelas (1x4, R) and freshman Rachel Conard (1x3, 2 R) had a hit.

Junior Lauren Highsmith (0.1, 3,2,2,2,0) suffered the loss after tossing 0.1 innings of work, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks. Dornelas (4.0,7,8,8,5,2) got the start, but left after 4.0 innings, giving up eight runs on seven hits. Sophomore Reggie Salvatore (3.0,5,2,2,0,1) pitched 3.0 innings in relief, surrendering two runs on five hits.

South Dakota State took a 4-0 lead in the first inning after connecting on two hits including a grand slam.

Centenary would go up 7-4 on three walks and a Herrington home run. Regan and Harris would also drive in two runs in the frame.

The Ladies would add another run in the third as Dornelas reached on a double down the left field line. She would later score on a bunt by Herrington.

Up 8-4, the Jackrabbits would make it a one-run game after they plated three runs on another home run. A lead off blast in the top of the fifth for South Dakota State would tie the game, forcing extra innings.

Centenary would strike first in the top of the eighth with three runs as Conard led off the frame with a single up the middle. Matak and Shepperd would each single to load the bases for Harris, who picked up an RBI on a walk, while Matthews single scored Matak.

Though holding a late lead, South Dakota State would prove stronger, scoring four runs for the win on five hits.

Game 2: South Dakota State 10, Centenary 4

Harris belted a home run and drove in three runs on a 2x3, one-run scored performance to lead the Ladies at the plate in Game 2. Junior Caitlin Cavarra went 2x4 with a run scored, Shepperd (1x3, R), senior Beth Krysiak (1x3) and Conard (1x3) and Matak (1x4) each had a base knock.

Salvatore (3.2,11,6,5,0,0) took the loss in relief after giving up five earned runs on 11 hits. Junior Courtney Avery (1.0,3,4,4,2,1) got the start and pitched 1.0 inning, allowing four runs on three hits and Highsmith (1.1,1,0,0,0,0) threw the final inning.

Centenary took the early lead at 4-0 after Cavarra, Matak, and Shepperd had consecutive singles allowing Harris to drive in three on a homer.

South Dakota State would tie the game at 4-4 on two hits including a double and home run and two walks.

The Jackrabbits would then go on to score six runs on seven hits and a Ladies error in the bottom of the fifth to take the game on the late threat.

Centenary and South Dakota State will wrap up the series on Saturday at Noon.
