Ladies Power Past Grambling, 7-1

SHREVEPORT-Junior Kalyn Harris and sophomore Bailey Boggs each belted their first homeruns of the season and senior Lauren Highsmith pitched 7.0 solid innings to propel the Centenary softball team to a 7-1 victory over Grambling on Tuesday evening in non-conference action.

The Ladies improved to 2-12 on the season with the win. Centenary had its best offensive production of the year, connecting on 11 hits as a team, including three extra base hits.

Harris led Centenary with a 2-for-2 effort with two runs scored and three RBI, including a two-run homerun and a sacrifice fly.

Senior Bonnie Matak was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, Boggs finished with a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored and an RBI, which came on a long ball, the second for the Ladies on the night.

Junior Leah Dark (2x3) had two knocks, while classmate Reggie Salvatore (1x4, R), sophomore Kelsey Regan (1x2, 2 RBI) drove in two.

Highsmith (2-8) (7.0,5,1,0,0,7) struck out seven and allowed just one unearned run on five hits through 7.0 innings for the win.

Grambling took the lead in the first with one run on one hit and one error, but Centenary would respond with two in the latter half of the inning. With one out, Matak doubled to left center, while Harris followed with a single. With runners on the corners, Harris scored before Regan drove in Matak on a line out to left field. Salvatore would drive in Harris after a Grambling error.

The Ladies would add to its lead in the second with two more runs on a two-run homerun by Harris, scoring Matak who reached on a single. Up 4-1, Centenary would plate three more runs in the fifth and sixth frames. Boggs homered in the fifth, while Harris plated Warren on a sacrifice fly.

Grambling was led at the plate by Jassitte Richardson's two hits. Brandi Payne (6.0,11,7,5,2,2) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits.

Centenary and Grambling met for the final time this season as they each picked up a win.

The Ladies will be back in action on Friday and Saturday when they host South Dakota State in a three-game Summit League set. Game times are set for Friday at 4 pm and 6 pm and Saturday at Noon.
