Wednesday, March 30, 2011

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary baseball team will continue its road tour when it travels to South Texas to take on UT-Pan American in a three-game series, beginning Friday at 6 pm and concluding on Saturday with a double-header starting at 1 pm in Edinburg, Texas.

The Gents (3-10) are coming off of a tough four-game set in Hawai'i where the Rainbows took all four from Centenary. Playing 10 games on the road thus far, Centenary is looking to return to winning ways as it has dropped the last five contests.

Despite not registering wins of late, Centenary is producing several positives, both offensively and defensively.

Sophomore Kyle Mauch has just made three starts in the field this season, but has proven himself offensively in the pinch-hitting role as he currently leads the team in average with a .375 clip with six hits in 16 at-bats.

Following him is sophomore Matt Creamer with a .296 average and freshman RJ Talamantes with a .289 average and a team-leading 13 hits, 10 runs scored and eight stolen bases.

Junior Kyle Morton has upped his season average to .273 and is riding a five-game hit streak into the weekend series. Morton paces the team with five RBI, three home runs and an impressive .545 slugging percentage. Also showing well off the bench of late has been junior Dan Lazarou, who is hitting .278, while tallying two key pinch hits at Hawaii last week.

In the starter role, junior Seth Lugo leads Centenary with a team-low 4.24 ERA and 2-2 record with one save. In 23.1 innings pitched, Lugo has fanned 22 batters. Out of the pen, sophomore Kelby Langston still maintains a perfect 0.00 ERA in five appearances. In 8.0 innings pitched, he has fanned eight hitters and allowed two runs, both unearned.

UT-Pan American is 6-8 on the season heading into the weekend series. The Broncos are 5-2 at home. Leading the way offensively for UTPA is Stuart Macinnes with a .391 average and a team-best 18 hits. Following him is Colten Van Komen (.357) and Roger Bernal (.327, 6 RBI).

Jonathan SA is 2-0 on the bump for the Broncos with a 2.25 ERA through 20.0 innings pitched. Cody Plunk leads the team with six appearances and four starts, while registering a 4.18 ERA and a 1-2 record.

UTPA has dropped eight of its last nine games, including two of three against Louisiana Tech.
