PREVIEW: Gents Begin Summit League Play at ORU
Thursday, April 7, 2011
SHREVEPORT-Playing in its final season in The Summit League, the Centenary baseball team will open conference play when it travels to defending champion Oral Roberts this weekend. The Gents are scheduled for a 6:30 pm start on Friday, followed by a double-header on Saturday at 2 pm and a 1 pm start on Sunday in Tulsa, Okla. at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

The Gents (3-13) are looking to snap their eight game losing skid as they wrap up their 17-game road tour. Centenary has been on the road since March 5.

Centenary wrapped up their non-conference schedule last weekend when it traveled to south Texas to play UT-Pan American in a three-game series. The Gents, unfortunately, didn't return with a win, falling in all three contests, including an 11-inning loss last Friday night.

Several Gents had strong weekends at the plate and improved their season averages, including freshman Mark Gillean, who holds a .438 average in 16 AB after connecting on four hits in six AB at UTPA. Also hitting well was freshman Derrick Hernandez, who is now hitting .292 on the year.
Behind Gillean in average is freshman Marc Martinez with a .323 clip, while senior Derek Dalzell and sophomore Kyle Mauch each hold .300 averages.

Junior Jeff Schaffert paces the team with eight RBI and 16 hits, while freshman RJ Talamantes leads with 11 runs scored and junior Kyle Morton has a team-best three home runs and 27 TB.

On the bump, Gents' ace Seth Lugo has recorded two of Centenary's three wins and is 2-3 on the year, along with one save. The righty has a 6.00 ERA in five starts.

Sophomore Cole Thompson leads the team with seven appearances, while sophomore Kelby Langston, out of the pen, has remained perfect with a 0.00 ERA in 12.0 innings pitched.

Oral Roberts is 11-11 on the season and 5-3 at home. The Golden Eagles have won the last two contests, both on the road at San Diego State and UALR.

Chris Elder is hitting .310 with a team-best 19 RBI to pace ORU in hitting. Nick Baligod is close behind with a .308 clip and a squad-leading 28 hits.

Four Golden Eagle pitchers have recorded two wins on the year, led by Alex Gonzalez' 46.0 innings pitched, 2-4 record and eight game starts. He holds an ERA of 3.52, while Bryce Smolen is 2-2 with a 4.67 ERA in six game starts. Matt Rush has a team-best four saves.

Centenary and Oral Roberts will meet for the 59th time on Friday in the school's history. The Golden Eagles own a 48-10 mark over the Gents. Centenary and ORU split the 2010 series in Shreveport, as the Gents garnered the first two wins of the four-game set.

In the Game 2 win of last season, Jeff Schaffert was 2-for-4 with a run scored and right-hander Derek Dalzell tossed 2.1 innings out of the pen for the win.
