Sunday, April 10, 2011
SHREVEPORT-The Centenary softball team surrendered a six-run fifth inning to allow UMKC the 11-2, five-inning win and sweep of the series on Sunday afternoon in Summit League play.

The Ladies (4-25, 2-13 Summit) made it a three-run game in fourth inning on a Bonnie Matak home run, but the Kangaroos bounced back to wrap up the series on top.

UMKC grabbed the early lead with four runs in the first inning on four consecutive hits to open the game. Centenary struggled again early at the plate against UMKC ace Deanna Friese as she managed to shut the Ladies down in order over the first three innings.

The Kangaroos plated another run in the third inning after a lead off walk and an RBI-double by pinch hitter Lindsey Davis.

Centenary made some offensive noise in the bottom of the fourth when Matak belted her team-leading third home run of the season over the right field wall, plating freshman Nicole Warren who led off with a single up the middle. The Ladies trimmed the score by three at 5-2.

Senior Lauren Highsmith (4.0,7,7,7,2,4) started her 23rd game of the season, but would fall to 2-18 on the year with the loss. The righty tossed 4.0 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Freshman Lynsi Unruh (1.0,4,4,2,1,0) tossed the fifth inning in relief, allowing two earned runs on four hits and one walk.

Centenary connected on four hits, led by Matak (1x3, R, 2 RBI) with a home run. Warren (1x3, R), freshman Chandelle Scott (1x1) and sophomore Jenny King (1x2) each had a hit.

The Ladies will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to UL-Lafayette for a 6 pm contest.
