PREVIEW: Baseball Back in Town; Hosts SDSU in Four-Game Set

SHREVEPORT-After over a month on the road, the Centenary baseball team returns to Shehee Stadium to host Summit League foe, South Dakota State in a four-game set this weekend. Games are set for Friday at 6 pm, Saturday (double-header) starting at 1 pm and Sunday at 11 am.

The Gents enter the weekend series with a 3-17 overall record and an 0-4 mark in Summit League play after opening league play at 13-time defending champion, Oral Roberts last weekend.

Despite falling in all four games, Centenary showed well in the final two contests, falling 2-0 and 3-1 to the Golden Eagles. The Gents are looking to snap a 12-game losing skid that dates back to March 12.

Playing well of late and now leading the team in batting average is freshman Mark Gillean, who is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak and hitting .400. Freshman Marc Martinez follows with a .294 clip, while junior Jeff Schaffert leads the team with 19 hits and eight RBI to accompany his .275 average. Freshman RJ Talamantes has a team-leading 14 runs scored and is second-best with 18 hits. Junior Kyle Morton is slugging .443 with five doubles, three home runs and one triple to pace the squad.

Getting starts last weekend were junior Seth Lugo (7.80, 2-4, 1 SV), senior Derek Dalzell (6.38, 0-2), freshman Laetten Galbraith (11.12, 0-3), and freshman Nic Parrott (4.22, 0-1).

Working out of the pen of late has been sophomore Kelby Langston (0.00, 7 AP), sophomore Cole Thompson (9.87, 8 AP), freshman Sam Martin (6.97, 7 AP) and freshman Ryan Maldonado (7.71, 7 AP).

South Dakota State enters the four-game set with a 16-10 overall record and a 3-1 mark in Summit League play. The Jacks opened league play last weekend at Western Illinois. SDSU is riding a four-game win streak after earning mid-week wins over non-conference opponents, Dakota Wesleyan and North Dakota.

The Jacks are hitting an impressive .305 as a team, led by Joel Blake and Beau Hanowski's .364 average. Eric Cain paces the team with 22 RBI, while Daniel Marra has belted seven home runs.

Looking to get starts this weekend for the Jacks are RHP Stephen Bougher (3.49, 4-2), RHP Blake Treinen (2.70, 2-2), Alex Oberle (5.30, 2-3) and Kolton Emery (5.24, 3-1).

Centenary and South Dakota State will meet for the 16th time in history as the Jacks own the series, 10-5. The Gents and Jacks split the 2010 series in Brookings, SD. Lugo picked up a win for Centenary in the series.
