PREVIEW: Baseball Slated to Host IPFW in Four-Game Set

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary baseball team will remain home and host IPFW in a four-game Summit League set this weekend at Shehee Stadium. The Gents are set to begin Friday at 6 pm, followed by a double-header on Saturday at 1 pm and a final game on Sunday at Noon.

The Gents are looking to snap an uncharacteristic 16-game skid as they enter the series with a 3-21 overall record and a 0-8 mark in Summit League play. Centenary is coming off a weekend series against South Dakota State where the Jackrabbits swept the Gents, despite Centenary having the lead in all four games.

Continuing to show well in his debut season is freshman Mark Gillean with a team-best .356 average in 10 game starts. Gillean's 16 hits are third-best on the team. Staying consistent as the leader behind the dish is junior Jeff Schaffert with a .289 average, a team-best 24 hits and 11 RBI. Freshman Marc Martinez is hitting .286, while classmate RJ Talamantes is close behind with a .282 mark, a team-leading 19 runs scored and 15 stolen bases.

Centenary has used a majority of their pitching staff of late as junior Seth Lugo (2-5, 7.12, 1 SV), freshman Nic Parrott (0-1, 4.08), senior Derek Dalzell (0-3, 5.26) and Martinez (0-0, 8.00) each had a start last weekend. Pitching out of the pen for the Gents of late has been sophomore Kelby Langston (0-2, 2.84), freshmen Sam Martin (0-0, 6.35), Ryan Maldonado (0-0, 7.41), sophomore Cole Thompson (0-6, 10.61) and freshman Laetten Galbraith (0-3, 11.77).

A LOOK AT IPFW
IPFW is 10-20 on the year and 5-3 in Summit League play. The Mastodons are coming off a weekend split with Southern Utah and a rained out mid-week game against Valpo. Will Faulkner is hitting .400 with a team-best 42 hits to lead IPFW at the plate. Seeing action as Mastodon starters is Nick Optiz (3-4, 4.50), Samuel Walker (4-2, 5.77), and Lucas Kesterson (0-4, 7.91).

SERIES HISTORY
Centenary and IPFW will meet for the 20th time in the school's history. The Gents own a 14-5 overall series record over the Mastodons heading into the weekend series. Centenary split the 2010 series in Fort Wayne, Ind.
