Lugo Fans 13; Gents Split Friday Contests with SUU

SHREVEPORT-Centenary junior Seth Lugo fanned 13 Thunderbird hitters, helping the Gents to a split on Friday over Summit League foe, Southern Utah as they took Game 2, 8-3 after falling in Game 1, 12-1 in eight innings.

With the split, Centenary improved to 8-25 overall and 5-12 in league play.

Game 1: Southern Utah 12, Centenary 1 (8 innings)

Southern Utah pitcher James Crockett held Centenary hitters to just three hits en route to a 12-1 victory in Game 1 for the Thunderbirds. The Gents struggled to gain an offensive advantage as they plated their only run in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI-single by freshman Pete Rajkovich, scoring junior Jeff Schaffert, who opened the frame with a single.

Two of Centenary's three hits came in the seventh as junior Kyle Morton's double to lead off the second was the Gents' only other base knock.

Freshman Nic Parrott (3.1,8,6,6,0,0) suffered the loss, tossing 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits to fall to 1-2 on the year.

Seeing action out of the pen for Centenary was freshman Ryan Maldonado (3.2,5,4,3,3,0), who pitched 3.2 innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits and three walks. Junior Dan Lazarou (0.0,1,2,2,2,0) allowed two runs on one hit and two walks, while freshman Trey Lavespere (1.0,0,0,0,0,1) punched one out in 1.0 inning of work.

Southern Utah belted out 14 hits, including five doubles and two home runs.

Game 2: Centenary 8, Southern Utah 3

Seth Lugo punched out a career-best 13 hitters, helping Centenary to yet, another come-from-behind, 8-3 win in Game 2.

The Bossier City, La. native (8.0,7,3,3,3,13) fanned 13 in 8.0 innings of work, while allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks, improving to 3-5 on the season.

Centenary's bats came alive in the third inning as it plated four runs to gain the lead after trailing 3-0. With one out, sophomore Matt Creamer and freshman Mark Gillean had back-to-back singles, before freshman JoAnthony Cantu's single to right field plated two. Freshman RJ Talamantes and Schaffert each had RBI-singles to follow.

The Gents continued to build on its lead with a run in the fourth and three in the fifth for an 8-3 lead. Creamer's sacrifice bunt plated Rajkovich who singled to open the inning in the fourth.

Morton got things rolling with his second double of the day in the fifth with one out. Schaffert singled and freshman Tyler Neporadny's sacrifice bunt scored the Gents' first run of the inning. Rajkovich and freshman Marc Martinez kept the inning alive with RBI-singles.

Gillean (2x4, R), Talamantes (2x5, R, RBI), Schaffert (2x4, R, RBI), Rajkovich (2x4, R, RBI) and Martinez (2x3, RBI) each led the Gents with two hits. Cantu (1x4, R, 2 RBI) drove in two on a single, while Morton (1x4, R), and Creamer (1x3, R, RBI) each contributed with hits.

Sophomore Kelby Langston (1.0,1,0,0,1,1) relieved Lugo in the ninth, allowing one hit and one walk, while fanning one for a scoreless final frame.
