"Front & Center" w/ Candace Rushing
Tuesday, August 31, 2010
Welcome to "Front & Center" with me, Candace Rushing. I am a junior, elementary education major at Centenary and have been looking forward to playing this Fall after an ACL injury and a red-shirted season last year. After what seemed like an eternity off the field, I am back. From countless minutes of watching the game I love go on without me, to endless hours of rehabilitation and physical therapy, finally, my time has come again to play.

Instead of reporting from the sidelines, this season I will give updates from a field player perspective. Every Tuesday of this Fall season I will be giving fans an inside look at my team; giving insight as to what makes us the Centenary Ladies soccer team.

From Laguna Beach, California to right here in Shreveport, Louisiana, my team is composed of a unique group of girls. Although the Division III decision made it difficult for our head coach Glenn Evans to recruit, he pulled through with a handful of wonderful additions to Centenary.

Preseason this Fall was different from any other preseason in the history of Centenary soccer. A usual preseason lasts close to two weeks, however this preseason we got started only five days before classes began. My teammates and I were apprehensive about the limited amount of training we were going to get in before our first game but to our liking, we were just fine.

For the first time since I have been on the team at Centenary, we took part in an exhibition game before our regular season begins. Friday, the twenty-seventh, Coach Evans and Kristen Davis, the Ladies basketball coach, drove us to Longview, Texas, home of LeTourneau University. After three thirty minute periods rather than two forty-five minute periods for coaching purposes, we walked off of the field with a win. Senior Kortney Causey found the back of the net twice while fellow junior Erika Rautio and myself each tallied a goal as well for a 4-0 victory.

The following day at practice each of us noted things that we need to work on individually and as a team with Coach Evans. Throughout this week that is just what we will do in order to prepare for our first season game on Friday, September 3rd against The Universitiy of Louisiana at Monroe, a tough DI opponent.

Keep us in your thoughts as we take on the Warhawks Friday. Also, mark your calendars for Sunday, September 5th at 1:00 PM for our first home game against the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Before you go, get to know two of my teammates and myself. Until next time...
