SUU Attack Offense Too Much, Ladies Fall in Three

CEDAR CITY, Utah-The Centenary volleyball team saw itself battling another close match, but wasn't able to secure the win, falling 3-0 at Southern Utah on Thursday evening in Summit League play.

The Ladies (3-7, 0-3 Summit) dropped set one 25-15, set two 25-20, and set three 25-22.

Southern Utah used a 57-kill outing to Centenary's 25 kills, which proved to be the deciding factor in the three narrow sets.

Leading the way on the offensive end for the Ladies was sophomore Shelby Singleton with eight total kills, while senior Bethany Kern had seven.

Junior setter Caitlin Neese provided 15 assists and freshman Bethany Nuttall contributed with seven.

Defensively, junior Jaclyn Lopez made a team-best seven digs.

Set one proved to be competitive as the Ladies held an early lead before allowing the Thunderbirds to go on a 4-0 run to tie the score at 7-7.

Several errors and improved offense by Southern Utah would secure them a solid lead at 16-10 after four consecutive kills. A .531 attacking percentage and 21 kills for the Thunderbirds allowed them to complete set one in a quick fashion.

In set two, Centenary gained an advantage after a Southern Utah attacking error at 7-6. However, two Ladies miscues and two kills by the home team tied the score at 9-9. It remained a back-and-forth contest as late as 18-18, but six kills by Southern Utah halted Centenary's momentum, downing them in set two by five.

Despite being down 7-2 in the final set, Centenary would battle back on two kills from junior Stevie Hulbirt and one by Lopez to narrow the score within two (8-6).

It looked as if Centenary would challenge the Thunderbirds in the third set when it came all the way back to gain a lead at 19-18, taking advantage of several Southern Utah mistakes.

But the Thunderbirds would back down on their powerful offensive game, notching three late kills to go up 22-20. A kill by Singleton excited the set at 24-22 before Southern Utah closed the door on one final kill.

Centenary will hit the road for a 7 pm Saturday match at UMKC before returning home next weekend. Live stats for Saturday's contest are available on GoCentenary.
