Gents Battle Strong UMKC Team to 1-0 Loss

SHREVEPORT-Looking to secure its first win of the season after playing to two double-overtime draws, the Centenary men's soccer team would battle a competitive and solid UMKC squad to a 1-0 loss on Saturday evening in Summit League action on Mayo Field.

The Gents (0-5-2, 0-1-2 Summit) out shot the Kangaroos, 12-10, but it was UMKC (7-3-1, 2-0 Summit) would come up successful in one shot attempt to gain solid ground in league standings.

After playing to a 0-0 draw in the opening half, UMKC would use a corner kick by Josh Lind to find Tom Black, tallying the first point of the game at the 64-minute mark.

Centenary was able to fire off seven second-half shots, but none found the back of the net.

Leading the offensive attack for the Gents was senior Heath Cox with three shots, one on goal, while senior Brian Hurlburt and juniors Tate McIntyre and Aaron Bergman contributed with two. Juniors Marcos Rodriguez and Ryan Christianson as well as sophomore Spencer Nickerson each added one shot.

Senior goal keeper Rennie Walker, again, played all 90 minutes, compiling six saves.

For UMKC, John Bayron Sosa fired off four shots on goal to lead the Kangaroos.

Ken Cooper, UMKC keeper, recorded two saves in 90 minutes worth of work.

Centenary will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 16 with a 7:05 pm kick off against Houston Baptist. The game will serve as senior night recognizing the Gents nine seniors: Heath Cox, Brian Hurlburt, Ryan Watson, Dragan Hinic, Zac Farrar, Rennie Walker, Adam Nerio, Micah Goodwin, and Ian Osteen.
