Gents Golf Scores Low, Finishes in Ninth

HUNTSVILLE, Texas-After improving their score after the opening round yesterday, the Centenary men's golf team fired a team total of 286, the lowest score yet, in the final round to finish the SHSU Harold Funston Golf Classic with an 891 and a ninth-place finish overall at Raven Nest Golf Club.

The Gents (305-300-286) was led by two under-par scores and just four-over on the day.

Freshman Brandon Sledge (76-73-70) was one of two Centenary players to wrap up play with a solid round of one-under 70, a career-best for the first-year student-athlete. Sledge finished in a tie for 27th overall and a three-round total of 219.

Senior Greg Berthelot (76-77-70) trimmed seven strokes off his second round in the final 18 holes to finish in a tie for 36th with a score of 223.

Senior Ryan Sparks (81-70-74) tied for 49th after compiling a three-round total of 225 with a three-over 74 on Tuesday, while senior Cannon Earp (76-80-72) tied for 57th with a solid one-over 72 and a score of 228. Sophomore Jay Frazier (77-86-81) rounded out the Gents in 73rd place with a score of 244.

Centenary moved up the leader board into ninth place after finished the first two rounds on Monday in 12th. Capturing the team title was Sam Houston State (278-289-279) with a three-round score of 846, while Oklahoma Christian (294-283-273, 850) took second followed by Oklahoma City (290-278-284, 852) in third.

Oklahoma Christian's Axel Ochoa (73-72-63, 208) took individual honors in front of teammate Oscar Stark (73-68-68, 209).

Centenary will return to action on October 25-26 at Houston Baptist's Invitational.
