Ladies and Gents Basketball to Begin Official Practice Friday
Thursday, October 14, 2010
SHREVEPORT-With less than a month away until the first basketball tip-off is underway, the Centenary men's and women's basketball squads will begin their first official practice on Friday under the direction of new head coaches Adam Walsh and Kristen Davis.

The Gents will take the floor from 8 am-10 am on Friday in the Gold Dome. This practice is open to the public.

"I am truly looking forward to my first full practice as a collegiate head coach. The excitement is tremendous and I'm sure our guys won't disappoint," said Walsh.

Centenary returns six players from last year's squad including senior Roman Tubner, who was fourth-best on the team in scoring with 8.0 a game and second-best with 41 steals. Also returning is junior Maxx Nakwaasah who started 19 contests last season and averaged 7.2 points a game.

The Gents welcome 11 new faces to the program as well as new assistant coach Justin LeBlanc.

"Our expectations are very high and our learning curve needs to be very small with all of the new pieces in our program. We are blessed with a very smart and hard-working group of newcomers and we are expecting a very high level of the three 3's...Effort, Energy, and Enthusiasm," said Walsh.

The Ladies will take the floor following the men at 10 am and are expected to go until 1 pm in the Gold Dome.

"The first day of practice is always filled with lots of excitement and high energy.  We finally get to come together as a team, after a long summer break, and go to work.  I can't wait to see how the returners have improved and what our newcomers will add.  Every one of the players has a specific talent to add and Friday, we finally get to start molding and shaping those talents together to create our team," said Davis.

Despite graduating two key seniors last season, the Ladies managed to return top forwards Ashley Jackson, who led the team in almost every category last season with 10.5 points per game and a team-best 43 steals and 35 blocks. Also returning is senior Anne Farrell who led the team with 6.0 rebounds a game, despite missing five games last season.

Davis takes over the program and will look to her upper classmen to lead the way as she returns seven from a year ago and welcomes five newcomers and new assistant coach Jennifer Fontenot.

"Every single player understands how much work we need to do before our opening game on November 17th at Sam Houston State.  On the first day of practice, every drill is always done with high intensity and energy.  As a team, we like to say "every day is a get better day."  That's the ton and mindset I expect them to have on the first day, and for it to continue throughout the year," said Davis.

The Centenary Gents will open their season on November 12 at Memphis with a 7:30 pm tip-off time, while the Ladies will open at Sam Houston State on November 17 at Noon.
