Saturday, October 23, 2010

SHREVEPORT-Sophomore Holden Penney notched the game-winner, while junior Eren Corapcioglu scored her first collegiate goal as the Centenary women's soccer team secured a 2-1 victory over Summit League foe, UMKC, on Friday evening on Senior Night.

The Ladies improved to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in league play, while the Kangaroos fell to 1-13-1 overall and 0-5-1 against league opponents.

Centenary garnered the lead at the 25-minute mark after Penney found Corapcioglu on a cross that reached the left corner of the net for a 1-0 Ladies advantage.

Less than 10 minutes later, UMKC would respond and tie the game at 1-1 on a goal by Meagan Malloy, assisted by Abby Shimota.

After a 1-1 standstill through halftime, Centenary would play a competitive 11 minutes before senior Kortney Causey's cross from the right side tipped the Kanagroo keeper's hands and found the foot of Penney, who recorded the game-winner, her second goal of the season.

UMKC out shot Centenary, 20-7 on the evening, but of the Ladies' seven attempts, six landed on goal. Penney led with three shots, two on goal, a goal and an assist, while Corapcioglu had two shots, both landing on goal.

Also making an attempt at goal was junior Candace Rushing and senior Emily McManus.

Junior keeper Kalyn Harris played all 90 minutes in goal, making six saves for the win.

For UMKC, Malloy put up four shots, two on goal. Keeper Jami Finnell also played all 90 minutes in goal, making four stops, but suffered the loss.

Centenary honored its four seniors McManus, Catie Depew, Causey, and Erika Rautio during halftime ceremonies.

The Ladies will wrap up its home schedule on Sunday against Southern Utah with a Noon kickoff.
