Ladies Fall in Three to Oakland
Sunday, October 24, 2010
SHREVEPORT-It was another tough night against a strong offense visiting team as the Centenary volleyball team fell in three straight sets (25-19, 25-10, 25-13) to Summit League foe, Oakland on Saturday evening in the Gold Dome.

The Ladies fell to 3-17 on the season and 0-12 in league action, while the Golden Grizzlies improved to 13-12 and 8-5 against league opponents.

Despite a 12-kill first-set effort, Centenary struggled to improve as the night went on, notching just 25 kills to Oakland's 42 and .292 attack percentage. The Ladies were led on the offensive attack by senior Bethany Kern and junior Stevie Kaye with eight kills apiece, while junior setter Caitlin Neese contributed with 22 assists.

Defensively, junior libero Taylor Gilmour led the Ladies with 12 digs, while Kaye tallied 11.

Oakland tallied 42 kills, led by Meagan Bray with 14 and Jenna Lange with 10. Libero Brittany Dunn had 10 digs to pace the defense.

The first set proved to be Centenary's strongest of the night as the score was tied six different times. The Ladies would find themselves in an 18-18 draw late in the set, but four of Centenary's six errors in that set came in the final eight chances.

Set two saw more miscues than successful opportunities to go on an 8-0 run near the beginning to go head 11-2. Oakland's lead remained as would suffer offensively and defensively, allowing four service aces.

Despite a better open to the final set, Centenary allowed the Golden Grizzlies to power up 15 kills to an evening-high .325 attack percentage. The Ladies narrowed the deficit to five at 12-7, but Oakland would continue to showcase its offensive prowess, sweeping the Ladies in three.

Centenary will return to action on the road this coming weekend as it travels to IUPUI and Western Illinois.
