Swimming Takes First at Southwestern, Gents Win Every Event

GEORGETOWN, Texas-The Centenary men's and women's swimming teams continued to show well against non-league opponents, as both squads captured first place finishes on Saturday against Southwestern University.

The men took top honors, defeating SWU 184-42, while the women also won first with a score of 151-102.

Performing at its best, the Gents finished first place in every event. Matthew Pittman, for the first time in Centenary swimming history, participated in every event including the relays.

With that effort, Pittman led the squad with three first place finishes in the 1000 yard free (10:41.39), the 500 yard free (5:02.58), and a part of the 200 yard free relay team (1:29.64) of Devin Ross, Pittman, Josh Pena, and Ben Donaldson.

Also showing well in his debut season was Austin Butler with three top finishes in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:20.16), in the 400 yard IM (4:27.15) and a part of the 200 yard medley relay team (1:42.07) of Ross Olivier, Butler, Mark Bassett, and Chris Sullivan.

Earning two first place finishes was John Cefalu in the 100 yard breast (1:02.31) and the 100 yard fly (53.49), along with Josh Pena in the 100 yard free (48.22) and as a part of the 200 yard free relay team (1:29.64) with Ross, who also garnered two top honors as well in the 100 yard back (56.31).

On the women's side, the Ladies captured 10 first place finishes, led by Lauren Lassiter with three top places. Lassiter won the 200 yard free (2:02.34), the 50 yard free (26.24), and the 200 yard back (2:13.82). Teammate Lauren Kloepfer also performed well with two top finishes in the 200 yard breast (2:37.17) and the 400 yard IM (4:49.28), while Hayley Schneider and Allison Jones garnered two first-place nods as well.

Schneider placed first in the 1000 yard free (11:48.17) and as part of the 200 yard free relay team (1:45.42) of Aurora Owen, Brittany Wilkens, Jones and Schneider. Along with Jones' relay finish, she took first as an individual in the 100 yard breast (1:13.34).

Along with placing first in their respective events, Kloepfer and Butler moved into eighth all-time on the Top 10 200 yard breaststroke list.

Centenary will be back in action on Nov. 19-20 at the Trinity Shootout held in Dallas, Texas. Time is still TBD.
