PREVIEW: Ladies Open Season at Sam Houston State, Wednesday

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary women's basketball team will open its 2010-11 season at Sam Houston State on Wednesday in Huntsville, Texas. Tip-off is slated for Noon.

SENIORS LOOK TO LEAD
Centenary rosters three seniors in Anne Farrell, Ashley Jackson and Sarah Weiler and the Ladies will look to these three to lead this fairly young squad. Farrell returns for her final season with a 9.3 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game career average, while Jackson has averaged 9.6 ppg and 5.1 rpg and Weiler has tallied 2.5 ppg and 2.3 rpg through three seasons.

Jackson and Farrell are among all-time leaders in Centenary women's basketball history in several categories and are looking to move up the list this season.

DAVIS BEGINS FIRST YEAR
Kristen Davis begins her first year at the helm of the Centenary women's basketball program. She served as an assistant under head coaches Steve Curtis and Bojan Jankovic for the past two seasons. Davis is a 2006 graduate of Northwestern State and played basketball for NSU for four years.

RELYING ON RETURNERS
Centenary returns seven for this season. Along with Jackson, Farrell and Weiler, the Ladies will rely on junior Megan Daniel, sophomores Vashni Sharp-Moore, Ne-Ne Cook, and Jalena Sanders to pace this young squad. Daniel returns after averaging 2.8 points per game last season, making 12 starts, while playing in all 29 contests. Sharp-Moore improved throughout the season, making nine starts and averaging 13.6 minutes a game. Cook came off the bench as a guard, tallying 21 assists, while Sanders helped the team down low, racking up 2.3 boards a contest.

LADIES WELCOME FOUR
The Ladies welcome four newcomers to the team, which all happen to be freshmen. The quad consists of three guards in Kat Vidovic (Austin, Texas), Sam Lynch (Katy, Texas) and Kendra Rice (Katy, Texas) along with forward Tandrea Shamblin (Garland, Texas).

GOTTA' LOVE LOUISIANA
Of the seven non-conference games scheduled this season, Centenary will face five in-state Louisiana rivals. The Ladies will host three of the five, beginning with its home opener Tues., Nov. 23 against ULM at 5 pm in the Gold Dome. Centenary will meet NSU, UL-Lafayette, Southeastern La. and McNeese State as well.

FROM A YEAR AGO
Jackson returns as Centenary's top scorer from a year ago. The Shreveport native saw action in all 29 games with 27 starts. Jackson led Centenary in scoring (10.5 ppg), blocks (35), assists (51) and steals (43) She managed to produce 16 games in double-figures and tied her career-high with 21 points against IPFW (Jan. 11), while also notching two double-doubles She tallied a season-best 13 boards against Northwestern State (Dec. 1) and ranked first on the team with 82 field goals made. She played all 40 minutes in seven contests and averaged 5.8 boards a game.

A DOZEN HOME. A DOZEN AWAY.
Centenary's schedule for the 2010-11 season consists of 12 home games and 12 away games for a balanced attack. The Ladies will play 9 of its 12 home games against Summit League opponents and the other two against ULM and Southeastern La. Centenary will travel to SHSU, Oklahoma State, Northwestern State, and McNeese State along with its conference foes.

LAST YEAR IN LEAGUE
Centenary will play its last year in The Summit League after announcing its transition to NCAA Division III next season. The College will join the competitive southern conference, the American Southwest Conference in 2011-12. This season features a DI schedule, but next year it will be full DIII.

AMONGST THE COMMUNITY
The Ladies just wrapped up its second fall community service exercise as they participated in "activity time" playing bingo with the elders at Magnolia Manor in Shreveport. Earlier this fall, the team took part in helping out with the First Baptist Fall Carnival and have made many appearances throughout the Shreveport-Bossier community.

SCOUTING SAM HOUSTON STATE
Sam Houston State is a member of the Southland Conference and is located in Huntsville, Texas. The Bearkats are currently 1-1 on the season after dropping its most recent contest, 69-60 at Ole Miss and defeating SEMO 60-51 in its season opener.

Leading the way is Chanice Smith with 14.5 points per game and 5.0 rebounds a contest. As a team, SHSU is shooting 39 percent from the floor and has scored 120 points in two contests.

CENTENARY-SAM HOUSTON HISTORY
Centenary and Sam Houston State will meet for the ninth time in history. Currently, the Bearkats lead the series 5-3. The last time these two teams met was Nov. 20, 2009 as SHSU took a 74-49 win over the Ladies. The first meeting came back in 1982 as Centenary won 64-58.
