"Full Court Press" w/ Coach K

Hello all... I have another two games to update you on.  We played Southern Utah on Saturday and UMKC on Monday.  I felt like we had a couple of great practices before our Southern Utah game.  We worked on a Box & 1 defense and the players really did a great job of picking it up quickly and working hard to perfect it.  I was excited about their work ethic and I was really looking forward to the game on Saturday.  We started the game great and were completely committed to the new defense.  We went into half time up 40 - 38.  This game was the first game that we have been ahead at the half and had the momentum in our favor.  And then it was time for the second half.  I'm sure you can guess what cost us the game. Rebounds!  We played great defense, forcing tough shots, and never boxed out.  SUU out rebounded us 54 - 23.  You don't even have to know anything about basketball to understand how bad that is.  Now I don't mean to be so negative, but we did everything we needed to do in that game except rebound.  And I'm tired of rebounding costing us the game.  There was an amazing moment that took place during the SUU game.  Our senior, Ashley Jackson, scored her 1,000th career point.  That is a huge accomplishment and it's very difficult to do.  We are all proud and very excited for Ashley.

For practice on Sunday, I had planned emphasizing and doing a variety of rebounding drills.  But unfortunately I wasn't able to attend practice.  I woke up Sunday morning with a swollen left eye, a puffy head, puffy elbows, puffy feet, red hives, and a tight throat. I was having an allergic reaction to some medicine I was taking. Not really how you want to start your day off.  So I headed to the ER.  And with as much Benadryl that they gave me, I was knocked out on my couch for the rest of the day.  Thankfully, Coach Fontenot took over and did the entire practice along with getting everything ready for UMKC.

I was really hoping that our energy and intensity would carry over from Saturday's game.  From tip off in our UMKC game I could tell we we're in trouble.  Normally, our half court defense is good, we just don't box out.  Well Monday, we decided not to play defense.  We let players drive middle and we failed to rotate to help side. To top that off, we didn't rebound either.  We did a good job of handling UMKC's press and forced them to get out of it.  But once we got passed half court, we didn't take care of the basketball ball.  I could tell the players were upset about our performance and I hope that will motivate them to come into practice and go to work.

Our next game is Saturday at Oral Roberts.  They are 8 - 0 in conference and play very well together as a team.  Bojan Jankovic is an assistant coach for the Golden Eagles.  He was the Head Coach at Centenary last year and we're all looking forward to seeing Coach B and his family.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your week as well as the following quote by Oprah Winfrey.

"Every day brings a chance for you to draw in a breath, kick off your shoes, and dance."
