Oakland's Shooting Shocks Ladies on Road
Saturday, January 29, 2011
ROCHESTER, Mich.-Senior Sarah Weiler scored a career-best 14 points to lead the Centenary women's basketball team, but it was an unusual impressive offensive showcase by Oakland that gave way to a 100-36 win for the Golden Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon in Summit League play.

The Ladies (0-17, 0-10 Summit) faced Oakland (14-7, 8-2 Summit), who shot an astounding 67 percent (38-57) from the field, while Centenary struggled from the floor at 28 percent (16-58). The Golden Grizzlies finished the second half on a 33-2 run, holding the Ladies with one field goal in the final 11 minutes of play.

Weiler, off the bench, was 7-of-9 from the floor in just 22 minutes of action. The center surpassed her previous high of 12 points, which came at Nicholls State on Dec. 20, 2007.

Behind Weiler in scoring for Centenary was sophomore Ne-Ne Cook with 13 points as she played her 10th 40-minute game this season.

Oakland jumped out to a 16-2 lead as Centenary's only basket in the first seven minutes of play came on a jumper by Cook at the 17:29 mark.

The Golden Grizzlies continued to build on its lead to go up by as many as 20 (30-10) with just over six minutes left in the first half. Cook and senior Ashley Jackson would combine for four points to make it a 16-point game, but that is the closest the Ladies would come the rest of the contest.

Weiler hit consecutive jumpers for Centenary to close out the first half down 21 (41-20).

The Ladies managed to hang around within 20 of Oakland for the first five minutes of the second half as Cook drained a three and had a lay up and Weiler added another jumper.

However, it quickly became a 30-point game (60-30) and escalated from there as Oakland's sharp shooting gave way to a 33-2 final run, holding the Ladies with just one field goal in the last 11 minutes.

Centenary's 28 percent from the floor included a struggling effort from the three-point line, hitting 1-of-16 for six percent. The Ladies shot just four free throws on the afternoon, making three for 75 percent.

Oakland had five players in double-figures, led by Bethany Watterworth's 17 points.

The Golden Grizzlies out rebounded the Ladies, 40 to 24. Jackson led Centenary with five boards.

Centenary will return to action on Monday evening at 6 pm CT when it travels to IPFW.
