Sunday, March 6, 2011
NACOGDOCHES, Texas-The Centenary baseball team allowed SFA to plate seven runs in the final two innings to go up 10-2 for a Game 3 win on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Gents fell to 2-3 on the season with the loss. Centenary tallied six hits on the afternoon to SFA's 14.

Centenary jumped on board early with a run in the first inning. Lead off hitter freshman RJ Talamantes opened the game after being hit by a pitch. An infield single by freshman Nic Parrott placed runners at first and third with one out. Junior Jeff Schaffert followed up with an RBI-sacrifice fly to right field, plating Talamantes.

SFA would answer back with two runs in the latter half of the inning after a hit-by-pitch and two RBI-hits. The Lumberjacks would add another run in the third after a lead off double and a sacrifice fly.

Junior starter Seth Lugo settled down and dominated SFA hitters through the next four frames, holding the Lumberjacks to three hits during that time.

Despite playing solid defense and relying on another solid start by Lugo, the Gents never could build offensive momentum until freshman Mark Gillean mustered up a double to left field in the seventh. He was then plated by a sharp single to right center by senior Derek Dalzell.

SFA began to take hold of the game in the seventh as it tallied five runs on five hits to go up 8-2. Lugo was relieved by Dalzell (0.2,5,5,2,2,0) and Parrott (0.2,2,2,0,0,0) and freshman Laetten Galbraith (0.2,1,0,0,0,0).

Centenary made it interesting in the ninth when Schaffert drew first on a hit-by-pitch. With two outs, junior Dan Lazarou punched a single through the right side, but a final strikeout would end the game for the Lumberjacks.

Lugo (6.0,6,3,3,0,4) would suffer the loss after tossing 6.0 solid innings. He righty allowed three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Centenary was led at the plate by Dalzell (2x4, RBI) with two hits and an RBI. Lazarou (1x1), Gillean (1x3, R), Schaffert (1x2, RBI) and Parrott (1x4) each garnered a hit.

SFA starter Justin Braddock (2-1) (6.0,3,1,1,0,2) picked up the win, his second of the season after tossing 6.0 innings. The righty allowed one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts.

Darren Crabtree led the Lumberjacks at the plate with three hits.

The Gents will return to play on Tuesday at Texas A&M. Game time is set for 6:35 pm in College Station, Texas.
