Ladies Basketball Welcomes 11 New Additions

SHREVEPORT-Centenary and head women's basketball coach Kristen Davis are pleased to announced that 11 new additions to the Ladies basketball program have accepted the institution's offer of admission and will gear up on the hardwood during the 2011-12 season.

With four returners from a year ago, coaches Davis and Layne Huckabay have been busy all summer. Centenary will welcome 10 freshmen, who hail from Texas and Louisiana and one junior college transfer from Texas.

"I'm very excited about our incoming class. Coach Huckabay did a fantastic job recruiting quality student-athletes," said Davis.

"We have a strong combination of guards and posts that will fit in great with our returning players. With the school year approaching, we just can't wait to get everyone together and get to work."

Angelique Black
Denton, Texas (Denton HS) - 6'0"
Angelique Black graduated from Denton HS in Denton, Texas. A 6'0" forward, she averaged over 8.0 rebounds a game in high school. She was honored with the team's Leadership Award. Angelique played summer basketball for the Texas Thunder for two years. Off the court, she was awarded the Outstanding Student award and was an honor roll student. She plans on majoring in communication and has hopes of becoming an ESPN anchor or hosting BET/MTV.

"Angelique is a strong, athletic post player who will battle in the paint for us."

Keya Brandon
Oberlin, La. (Oberlin HS) - 5'7"
Keya Brandon hails from Oberlin, La. and is a graduate of Oberlin HS. The 5'7" guard will also play softball for Centenary. Off the court, she graduated Salutatorian of her class, was an honor student, an All-American scholar, and a Wendy's Heisman winner for her school. Keya plans to major in biology and would like to pursue a career as a physical therapist.

"Keya is an athletic guard who sees the floor well and also will be a great scorer for us."

Taraina Hamilton
Destrehan, La. (Destrehan HS) - 5'6"
Taraina Hamilton is a graduate of Destrehan HS in Destrehan, La. and attended Louisiana College last year, but did not play basketball. She earned four letters in basketball and helped team to a District 6-5A Championship. Taraina was a co-captain and named to the Academic All-State team. Off the court, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, named to the Principal's List, was an honors graduate and was a part of the Louisiana Delegate for Girls State. She also graduated in the Top 1% of her class of 365. Taraina looks to pursue a career in speech pathology.

"Taraina is a passionate player who works hard every day to develop her game."

Taliah Hollier
Crowley, La. (Cy-Springs HS) - 5'6"
Taliah Hollier is a graduate of Cy-Springs HS. She earned two letters in basketball as a guard for the Panthers. She looks to major in business at Centenary and hopefully pursue a basketball career overseas.

"Taye is a quick guard that has the ability to get to the basket and finish. We will also be looking to her for her defensive intensity while pressuring up our opponents."

Kelly Johnstone
Mesquite, Texas (Tyler Junior College) - 5'8"
Kelly Johnstone is originally from Mesquite, Texas, but played two seasons at Tyler Junior College. The 5'8" shooting guard earned three letters in basketball at Mesquite HS. At TJC, Kelly was a 2nd Team All-Conference honoree and helped her team to a 23-8 record. She was an Academic All-American selection and served as a team captain. Kelly is a psychology major and has aspirations of becoming a social worker or juvenile probation officer.

"Kelly is a great shooter with long range. I expect her to make an immediate offensive impact."

Sh'Rhonda Kendrick
Shreveport, La. (C.E. Byrd HS) - 5'3"
Sh'Rhonda Kendrick is a local product out of C.E. Byrd HS down the street from Centenary. She was a four-year basketball letterwinner for the Yellow Jackets. She helped her team to a 29-5 record, was named Athlete of the Week, and named to the Second Team All-District squad. She averaged 7.0 ppg and 7.0 assists per game. Off the court, Sh'Rhonda was a Top Jacket Srgt. at Arms. She plans on majoring in biology and has hopes of pursuing a career in the medical field.

"Sh'Rhonda is a quick, athletic point guard. Playing high school basketball at Byrd High School, she is familiar with tough competition and I'm looking forward to her transition Centenary. "

Amber Kovac
Monroe, La. (River Oaks) - 5'8"
Amber Kovac hails from Monroe, La. and graduated from River Oaks. She earned letters in basketball (three), soccer (one), softball (three) and track (four) for the Mustangs. Off the court, Amber was an honor roll student, secretary of the Interact Club, Vice President of FCS, and treasure of the Student Council. She was awarded the American Legion award, art, chemistry II and French subject award. Amber looks to pursue a career in veterinary.

"Amber is a talented multi-sport high school athlete that we expect to be a very versatile player for us."

Christian Prince
Patterson, La. (Patterson HS) - 5'10"
Christian Prince graduated from Patterson HS in Patterson, La., but also attended North Laurel HS in London, Kentucky. She earned four letters in basketball, two in softball and one in track and field. Christian was named 2nd Team All-District and Academic All-District in basketball. She was also awarded the Senior Award, the Female Scholars Award and was a team captain. Off the court, she graduated as one of her school's Valedictorians, was an honor roll student and a Hugh O' Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) representative. She looks to graduate with a degree in chemistry and become a doctor.

"Christian is a tough, smart player with a great work ethic and will be a great addition to our team."

Kayla Ruth
Gonzales, La. (St. Amant) - 5'9"
Kayla Ruth graduated and played basketball for St. Amant in Gonzales, La. As a 5'9" forward, Kayla earned two letters in basketball and one in track for the Gators. She was voted Most Improved Player by her team. Kayla looks to earn a degree in psychology and purse a career in law.

"Kayla is a player who has consistently improved her game over the last year and we're excited to have her at Centenary. "

Derrany Thomas
Lake Charles, La. (Washington Marion Magnet HS) - 5'2"
Derrany Thomas was a three-sport athlete at Washington Marion Magnet HS in Lake Charles, La. She earned four letters in basketball, three in track and one in volleyball for the Indians. Derrany helped her team to the state playoffs her final three seasons. Off the court, she is a member of the National Honor Society. She looks to pursue a degree in biology and a career in genetics.

"Derrany is a great offensive threat that we are looking forward to adding to our team. She is quick and aggressive when driving to the basket."

Skylar Vaughn
Minden, La. (Glenbrook College Preparatory School) - 5'9"
Skylar Vaughn graduated from Glenbrook College Preparatory School in Minden, La. She earned four letters on the basketball team for the Apaches. She is a 5'9" forward/shooting guard. She looks to pursue a degree in education and become a high school mathematics teacher and basketball coach.

"Skylar is an energetic player who brings a lot of intensity to the floor when she plays."

The 11 newcomers will join senior Megan Daniel, junior Vashni Sharp-Moore and Jalena Sanders, as well as sophomore Tandrea Shamblin to make up this upcoming year's squad.
