Gents Fight to Secure 4-2 Win in Season Opener
Friday, September 2, 2011

SHREVEPORT-Senior Ben Barcelona's two goals and senior Marcos Rodriguez's game-winner helped propel the Centenary men's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over Texas College on Thursday evening in non-conference action.

The Gents (1-0) earned a victory in their season opener and can credit an entire team effort for the win. Five seniors contributed offensively, led by Barcelona's two goals.

Centenary grabbed the early lead at the 11-minute mark when Rodriguez's tap to Barcelona found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Freshman Gabriel Zahm, quickly off the bench, netted his first collegiate goal, a shot assisted by junior Adam Ghaemmaghami, in which slid under the keeper's diving hands.

It wasn't three minutes later, Texas College jumped on board with its first goal by Nestor Ramirez to narrow the score 2-1 heading into halftime. The Steers' Jesus Segovia came out with a goal just two minutes into the final half evening the score at 2-2.

With nearly 20 minutes passing and no score change, Centenary began to pick up the late intensity. Rodriguez's rocket shot, assisted by senior Aaron Bergman, outside the 18 box into the top right corner proved to be the game winner.

Barcelona, though, would make it a 4-2 game on an all-alone attack at the 83-minute mark, assisted by senior Kyle Mehnert.

Centenary goal keeper junior Robbie Ramirez played all 90 minutes in goal, tallying four saves for the win.

The Gents out shot Texas College, 19-12 and produced 11 shots on goal. Barcelona led with seven shots, five on goal, while junior Spencer Nickerson and senior Ryan Christianson each had two shots.

Centenary will return to action at home on Monday, Sept. 12 when it hosts cross-town rival, LSUS, at 7 pm on Mayo Field.
