Volleyball Sweeps Day 1 of U-Dallas Invitational

IRVING, Texas-The Centenary volleyball team made an impressive showing in its 2011 debut at the University of Dallas Invitational on Friday posting a 3-0 win over Polytechnic University of NY and a 3-1 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering.

The Ladies (2-0) opened the season with two straight wins for the second year in a row.

"We showed tremendous heart today," said second-year head coach Jon Stenman. "This was our first competition and we had our ups and downs, but in the end we rallied and came out victorious."

Match 1: Centenary 3, Polytechnic Institute of NY 0
In the 3-0 win over Polytechnic University of NY, Centenary swept the match, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19.

The Ladies dominated the offensive end as junior middle blocker Shelby Singleton posted 11 kills and four blocks to pace Centenary. Freshman Chelsea Petska added nine kills and eight digs in her collegiate debut. Senior setter Caitlin Neese controlled the offensive tempo with a team-best 16 assists, while senior defensive specialist Taylor Gilmour added two aces.

Match 2: Centenary 3, Milwaukee School of Engineering 1
The Ladies battled through four sets to earn their second consecutive win. Centenary opened with a 25-17 set one win, but dropped set two, 17-25. Tied 1-1, the Ladies picked up their offensive intensity to edge MSOE, 31-29 and 26-24 in the final two sets.

Singleton showcased her presence in the middle with 21 kills and two blocks in the second match alone. She was assisted by freshman Sarah Sumner with another impressive feat of 12 kills, one block and one ace in her collegiate debut.

Senior Jaclyn Lopez powered up seven kills and finished the day with 12 total kills and no errors as an outside hitter. Neese dished out 48 assists in match two and Gilmour made 10 digs in the defensive position.

"The last two sets against MSOE were two of the most exciting matches I have had the pleasure of being a part of," said Stenman.

Centenary will return to action on Saturday with a 1 pm match start against ASC foe, Sul Ross State, followed by a 5 pm start against host-U-Dallas.
