Baseball Releases 2012 Season Schedule
Monday, October 3, 2011
SHREVEPORT-The Centenary baseball program and head coach Mike Diaz released the 2012 Gents season schedule, Monday, which features 22 home games at Shehee Stadium.

Centenary will open its season much earlier than in the past when the Gents host Hendrix College on February 4-5 in a three-game series at home. The Gents will then follow up with a double-header against Texas College on Tuesday, February 7 in front of their home crowd.

"Weather always comes into play when starting in February and having three weeks less to prepare will be a challenge our coaching staff will have to adjust to," said Diaz. "But overall I don't see any real issues."

The 2012 schedule is fairly balanced, but Centenary will see 22 home contests this season compared to 17 road games. Last year's squad saw themselves on the road for 17 straight games after opening the 2011 season with three games at home.

"Anytime you can have more home games than away games that can be an advantage, but whether we are home or away we will expect the same result," said Diaz.

Centenary will continue its non-conference slate when it travels to San Antonio, Texas on February 14-15 to take on future SCAC conference foe, Trinity in a three-game set.

Following six conference games, Centenary will host Louisiana Tech on Tuesday, March 6 at 6 pm at Shehee Stadium, followed by a trip to Grambling on Tuesday, March 13 for a single game at 6 pm.

The Gents will then face Louisiana Tech once again, but in Ruston, La., on March 21 at 6 pm and will wrap up the season with a non-conference game on April 24 against LSU-Shreveport at home at 6 pm.

"I think we have a nice mix of strong opponents from Div I, Div III, and NAIA. Our goal in scheduling is to play as good of competition as we can at home and on the road so that our team is prepared for conference play," said Diaz.

Centenary will move from four-game conference sets to three-game sets this year in ASC play. All home series will be played on Friday at 6 pm, followed by a double-header on Saturday beginning at 1 pm. Away series are still TBA at the moment.

"I definitely think the 3-game series gives the team with the stronger pitching staff a distinct advantage," said Diaz.

Centenary will open American Southwest Conference play on February 24-25 when it hosts McMurry. It will then travel to Abilene, Texas to take on Hardin-Simmons.

Centenary will host McMurry, ETBU, Univ. of the Ozarks, UT-Tyler and LeTourneau in conference play. The Gents will travel to Hardin-Simmons, Louisiana College, Mississippi College, and UT-Dallas.

"I know that the ASC has great coaches and players in it and we are excited to see how we stack up this year," said Diaz.

The Centenary baseball program will host its annual Alumni Golf Tournament on Friday, November 4 at Shreveport Country Club. Fans are encouraged to participate. For more information, contact the baseball office at (318) 869-5095.
