Team Effort Propels Gents to 1-0 Win Over UMHB
Saturday, October 22, 2011

SHREVEPORT-One of the biggest tests of the season came on Friday night when the Centenary men's soccer team earned a 1-0 shutout win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Mayo Field in ASC play.

The Gents won their 10th game of the season and improved to 10-3-1 and 8-2-1 in conference play. Centenary also recorded its second consecutive shutout victory against a very competitive Crusaders team that shared the same record as the Gents entering tonight's contest.

Centenary's defense found a way to hold UMHB scoreless in a very even-matched game that saw both teams fire off 14 total shots, seven landing on goal. It was a team effort that kept the Crusaders from tying the game after Centenary grabbed an early lead less than five minutes after the first whistle.

Senior scoring leader Marcos Rodriguez continued to do what he does best and netted his seventh goal of the season at the 4:32 mark on a header shot that was passed from senior Ryan Christianson.

That early goal proved enough as junior goal keeper Robbie Ramirez remained a steady force in goal, playing all 90 minutes and collecting his ninth win of the season and sixth shutout. The Dallas, Texas native made seven saves in goal leading the defensive effort.

Rodriguez and junior Spencer Nickerson each tallied three shots, one on goal to lead the offensive attack, while senior Tate McIntyre and Christianson each fired off two shots.

Centenary also outplayed UMHB in corner kicks, tallying six to the visitor's two.

Centenary will wrap up play at home on Saturday when it hosts Howard Payne at 6 pm on Mayo Field. Prior to the start of the game, the Gents will honor its 10 seniors (Ben Barcelona, Aaron Bergman, Ryan Christianson, Jihad Elaydi, Marcos Rodriguez, RB Asenime, Tate McIntyre, Kyle Mehnert, Cody Wolfe, and Glauber Santos) and one foreign exchange student (John Finn).
