Ladies Drop ASC Opener, 73-59 at UT-Dallas Despite Strong Second Half

RICHARDSON, Texas-Junior Jalena Sanders recorded her first career double-double, but it wasn't enough as the Centenary women's basketball team dropped its ASC opener on the road at UT-Dallas, 73-59.

The Ladies fell to 0-2 on the season with the loss, while UT-Dallas improved to 2-0. Centenary and the Comets played a very balanced game, matching each other in most statistical categories.

Three Ladies scored in double-figures as senior Megan Daniel and junior Vashni Sharp-Moore each led with 14 points apiece. Sanders' double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Sharp-Moore paced Centenary with seven assists at the guard position.

Centenary shot a respectable 37 percent (23-62) from the floor, but struggled from the charity stripe at 60 percent (9-15). The Ladies faced a strong shooting UT-Dallas, who fired off 50 percent (29-58).

UT-Dallas gained a 20-point advantage midway through the first half and never allowed Centenary to hold a lead during the game. The Comets and the Ladies exchanged baskets for the remainder of the opening 20 minutes before UT-Dallas took a 22-point lead at 43-21 into halftime.

The Comets used 14 unanswered points during a four-minute span in the early going of the second half to extend its lead. The offensive dominance by UT-Dallas allowed them to go up by a game-high 32 points with 11 minutes to play.

Not backing down, Centenary responded with a 20-5 run in the final seven minutes of the game to narrow the score to a 12-point deficit (71-59) with under 30 seconds left.

Also scoring for the Ladies was freshman Dio Warr with six points and a team-best three steals, while junior Kelly Johnstone drained two treys for six points.

UT-Dallas' Lyndsey Smith led all scorers with 21 points.

Centenary will return to action when it travels to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, November 26 for a 5:30 pm contest in Belton, Texas.
