MCM Uses Second Chances to Defeat Ladies

ABILENE, Texas-The Centenary women's basketball team allowed McMurry 30 second-chance points on 51 total rebounds in an 81-67 loss on Saturday afternoon on the road.

The Ladies fell to 2-6 on the year, while McMurry improved to 7-1.

Centenary had four players reach double-figure scoring, led by junior Vashni Sharp-Moore's 17 points and six assists. Junior Jalena Sanders added 13 points and senior Megan Daniel contributed with 12, which included a 4-for-4 effort at the charity stripe.

Also reaching double-digits offensively was freshman Dio Warr with 10 points off the bench.

On the boards, sophomore Tandrea Shamblin led Centenary with a career-best 11 rebounds, while Daniel pulled down six.

Sanders and Daniel combined for the first 9-of-11 points for Centenary as the Ladies held their only lead at 11-8 after five minutes of play. A 12-0 run by McMurry put them on top by nine (20-11) with 10 minutes left in the opening half.

Centenary responded in strong fashion with seven unanswered points by Sharp-Moore and Daniel to trim the deficit to two (20-18) after just a minutes escaped off the clock. However, McMurry continued to shoot well offensively, sparking another run (13-3) to pull back ahead by 12 (33-21) with 4:15 to play.

Centenary never could gain any first-half ground on McMurry, trailing by 15 (43-28) at the half.

McMurry opened with the first six points of the second half before Sharp-Moore's layup have the Ladies their first bucket of the final 20 minutes. McMurry stayed consistent around the rim, earning its largest lead of the game in the final seconds of play at 26 (87-61).

Centenary managed to shoot 39 percent (21-54), while McMurry fired off 41 percent (33-80). The Ladies struggled from the free throw line, knocking down just 16-of-25 for 64 percent.

The largest measure of difference in the contest came in McMurry's 51 rebounds to Centenary's 33. Of the 51 rebounds, McMurry pulled down 28 offensive boards.
