Preview: Gents Close 2011 at ETBU

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary men's basketball team will look to close 2011 on a positive note as it plays its final game of the year on Saturday at 3 pm at ETBU in Marshall, Texas.

The Gents sit at 1-6 on the year, all against ASC opponents.

Despite shooting quite well and scoring 88 points, the Centenary men's basketball team faced a sharp-shooting McMurry squad in a 98-88 loss on the road on Saturday afternoon. Several freshmen recorded career-highs offensively, while senior Maxx Nakwaasah again, put up his sixth 20+ game, leading all scorers with 26 points on 14-of-15 from the free throw line. Posting career numbers and scoring double-figures behind Nakwaasah for the Gents was freshmen JaColby Hardin-Crawford with 17 points, Caden Cheramie with 15 points, Tyler Wright with 14 points and sophomore Brandon Center with 10 points.

Through 8 games played, senior Maxx Nakwaasah continues to guide this young team in scoring and rebounding, posting 25.9 ppg and 8.1 rpg. Playing well of late are freshmen JaColby Hardin-Crawford (9.3 ppg/85% FT), Tyler Wright (8.0 ppg/46% 3PT), and Caden Cheramie (7.4 ppg/47% FG). Nakwaasah also leads the team in steals with 10, while fellow senior Matt Nichenko has contributed with eight blocks.

Centenary is averaging 71.7 ppg, but allowing opponents 82.9 ppg. The Gents pull down an average of 32.7 rpg, while opponents are better at 40.0 rpg.

Maxx Nakwaasah has excelled the last three seasons as the Gents' leading scorer and one of the top rebounders on the team as a small forward. The Dallas, Texas native is eyeing the 1,000 point club and 500 rebound club at Centenary in his final season.

ETBU enters Saturday's contest with a 2-5 overall record and a 2-4 mark against ASC schools. The Tigers are coming off a 95-65 loss at Hardin-Simmons last Saturday. ETBU is led Jeremy LaGarde with 15.1 ppg. RJ Prince averages 13.0 ppg, followed by Jaron Joseph with 11.6 ppg. Ahnre Gray leads the team in rebounding with 5.6 rpg.

Centenary and ETBU will meet for the 30th time in school history on Saturday. Currently, the Gents own a 28-1 all-time record over the Tigers dating back to 1946. Centenary and ETBU last met back in 2001 when Centenary earned an 87-67 win at home.

The Gents will take a few weeks off from play and look to return to action on Thursday, January 5 at home against Sul Ross State at 7:30 pm. That game will mark five straight for Centenary in the Gold Dome.
