Ladies Pull Off First Road Victory Since 2009 at ETBU

MARSHALL, Texas-Senior Megan Daniel and junior Jalena Sanders each scored 23 points in an 81-73 road win for the Centenary women's basketball team over ETBU on Saturday afternoon.

The win was the first road win for the Ladies since a 68-66 win on December 19, 2009 at McNeese State. With the victory, Centenary improved to 3-6 overall and 3-5 against ASC opponents.

Centenary managed to come-from an 11-point deficit midway through the first half to win by eight. The 81 points scored was the most points scored in a Ladies' win since 2006 when Centenary defeated Sam Houston State 84-70 on the road.

Sanders netted a career-best 23 points on 9-of-11 from the floor. The Ruston, La. forward surpassed her previous high of 16 points, which came twice and last against UMHB.

Daniel also sank 23 points on seven field goals and eight free throws made.

Also adding to the offensive mix was junior Kelly Johnstone with nine points, while freshman Derrany Thomas with seven and sophomore Tandrea Shamblin with six.

Junior Vashni Sharp-Moore led the team in rebounding with 10 and added a game-high eight assists.

ETBU out rebounded Centenary 57 to 39. Following Sharp-Moore on the boards for Centenary was Daniel and Sanders with eight.

Centenary shot 42 percent (27-64) from the floor and knocked down seven treys. The Ladies were held to just 14 turnovers and forced ETBU into 22 turnovers on nine steals.

ETBU grabbed the early-game lead with the first six points before Sanders netted Centenary's first bucket at the 16:26 mark. Both teams exchanged baskets for the next five minutes as the Lady Tigers held a manageable lead.

A three pointer by Thomas and a layup by Sanders trimmed the deficit to five (28-23) with eight minutes to play. An 11-2 late-half run sparked a comeback for Centenary as the Ladies tied the game at 40-40 on two made free throws by freshman Taye Hollier. A jumper in the final minute of the first half by ETBU gave them a two-point lead (42-40) at the half.

Centenary took its first lead of the game on a three by Shamblin to open the first half. Sanders and Daniel sparked the Ladies offensive run, giving Centenary a five-point lead after just three minutes of play.

ETBU's Enid Sanchez scored the next five for the home team to tie the game at 51-51 with 14:40 remaining. Daniel and Johnstone's treys put the Ladies back on top and ahead by six (57-51). The two treys started a 10-0 run by Centenary which led to a 10-point lead (63-53) midway through the half.

Centenary saw itself ahead by just three (63-60) after an ETBU scare , but with six minutes left Sanders sank two free throws and Johnstone's three extended the lead to eight. The Ladies took its largest lead of the game following seven unanswered points to go up by 13 (75-62) with 2:19 left.

ETBU narrowed the deficit to four (77-73) with 46 seconds left, but Sharp-Moore and Daniel each hit crucial free throws in the final seconds for the win.

Centenary will return to play on Monday, Dec. 19 at home against McNeese State at 7 pm. The Ladies are hosting a food drive in conjunction with the holiday season and the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana. Fans are encouraged to bring 3 canned goods to the Gold Dome for FREE admission into the game.
