Happy New Year everyone!  I hope everyone had a great Christmas and you're ready to embrace and enjoy the New Year.

We came back to practice on December 28th to get ready for are game on December 30th against Lamar University.  We had two practices on the 28th.  I knew the players would need a little extra running and conditioning to work off their Christmas dinner and holiday treats they enjoyed over the break.  Our first practice started at 9 am and it actually went very well.  Our intensity and energy was much better than I expected.  Coach Huckabay and I could definitely tell the players were tired and hurting at times, but they pushed through practice.  Our 2nd practice of the day started at 5pm.  This is the practice that I really saw the cookies, cakes, and treats from the break take affect.  Even with our player's bodies in post-Christmas shock, Coach Huckabay was able to begin his scouting report of Lamar.

Thursday, December 29th we loaded the bus in the morning and headed out to Beaumont, TX.  Our practice a Lamar started out very slow.  The players decided to walk and job through their warm-up drills.  So when they we're done, we circle up as we normally would and then I told them to do the entire warm-up over again.  The 2nd time around it looked dramatically better.  Funny how that happens....and after that we actually had one of our best practices.  We were talking more on defense and rotating better than I've seen us do in a long time.  After that practice, I felt very good about our game the following day.

On Friday, we tipped off against Lamar at 7 pm.  We started off the game very well.  The game was back and forth for the first ten minutes of the game.  We had an aggressive attitude in our play that I was happy to see.  We weren't just playing defense, we were attacking on defense.  Lamar went on a run before the half and we found ourselves down at halftime.  During the second half, we just couldn't overcome the deficit from the 1st half.  We ended up losing the game by 29 points.  I know we lost, but there were many positives for us during the game.  We tied Lamar in rebounds.  This is huge for us.  If you've read any of my other blogs then you know that rebounding has been huge issue for us.  This was a great game for us to have after a long break to prepare us for our upcoming conference play.

Thursday, we tip off against Sul Ross State University at 5:30 pm in the Gold Dome.  Seven out of our nine games in January are at home.  January needs to be a big month for us and I hope to see you at the games.

Hope you enjoy the quote.
