Ladies Battle Strong HPU Squad in Loss
Saturday, January 7, 2012
SHREVEPORT-Freshman Dio Warr notched her first career double-double and junior Vashni Sharp-Moore led the Ladies in scoring with 16 points, but it wasn't quite enough as the Centenary women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought game to Howard Payne, 66-55, on Saturday afternoon in the Gold Dome.

The Ladies fell to 4-9 on the year and the loss snapped a two-game ASC win streak, while the Lady Jackets improved to 11-2.

Warr recorded 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to pace the Ladies, surpassing her previous high in rebounds by three which was seven against Schreiner. Sharp-Moore led the team in scoring with 16 points, followed by senior Megan Daniel with 10 points.

Centenary out rebounded Howard Payne, 49 to 48 despite not matching the visitors in size. Junior Jalena Sanders grabbed 11 boards for Centenary, followed by Warr with 10, Daniel with eight and Sharp-Moore with seven.

The Ladies struggled offensively, shooting just 27 percent (18-65) from the floor and 19 percent (4-21) from the three-point line. Howard Payne fired off 39 percent (27-69) from the floor, led by Jasmin Thomas' 22 points.

Centenary opened the game with a four-point lead (6-2), but that was the largest lead the Ladies would hold a lead the remainder of the game. Howard Payne went on an 11-3 run midway through the half to pull ahead by four (13-9).

A fairly close contest occurred for much of the half until the Lady Jackets made it a seven-point game (20-13). The Ladies received a three from Daniel and two made free throws by freshman Ronny Kendrick to narrow the score to
three (22-19).

Howard Payne then responded with 10 unanswered points to hold its first double-digit lead at 13 (32-19) with 2:19 left. Daniel connected on a three-point play to end the half, but the Ladies trailed by 10 (34-24).

Centenary allowed Howard Payne to open the second half on a 10-0 run to go up by 20 (44-24) in the first four minutes of play before Kendrick's free throw ended the run. The Ladies were held without a field goal until Daniel's trey found the bottom of the net at the 15:00 minute mark.

The Lady Jackets were able to maintain a hefty lead over the Ladies. Down by 17 (53-36) midway through the final 20 minutes, Centenary trimmed the score to nine following an 8-0 run on five points by Sharp-Moore.

Howard Payne then scored eight unanswered points to regain its lead at 17. The visitors hit five free throws in the final minute of play to cap the 11-point win.

Centenary was forced into 20 turnovers, which led to 17 points.
