Slow Start to Second Half Dooms Ladies

SHREVEPORT-Despite being tied at the half with Mississippi College, the Centenary women's basketball team couldn't find an answer in the second half, falling 79-59 to the Lady Choctaws on Thursday evening in the Gold Dome.

With the loss, the Ladies fell to 4-10 on the year, while Mississippi College improved to 7-6.

Centenary was led in scoring by junior Vashni Sharp-Moore with 13 points, followed by junior Jalena Sanders with 10.
Adding eight points to the mix was freshman Ronny Kendrick and junior Kelly Johnstone. Freshman Dio Warr chipped in with seven off the bench and senior Megan Daniel scored six.

The Ladies shot just 28 percent (20-71) from the floor, while Mississippi College was better at 49 percent (29-59).

Centenary was out rebounded, 54 to 32. Sanders pulled down a team-best seven boards, followed by Johnstone with six.

Centenary and Mississippi College were tied four times during the first half as the Ladies took their largest lead at seven with 10:48 to play. A tied game after four minutes of play, Daniel's layup gave Centenary a lead, which lasted until the 4:35 mark following a Mississippi College 8-0 run.

The Ladies' seven-point lead at the 7:56 mark turned into a Lady Choctaw lead four minutes later. Centenary battled the final three minutes as Sharp-Moore and Daniel each sank treys to make it a 36-36 game at the half.

Mississippi College jumped out to a 53-40 lead after five minutes of play after a 17-2 run. The Ladies were held without a field goal until Warr's layup at 14:43 found the bottom of the net.

Sharp-Moore's three at 9:28 was the second field goal of the second half as the Ladies were held to just two buckets in the first 10 minutes.

Mississippi College took its largest lead of 24 (70-46) at the 6:14 mark and from that point on the Ladies weren't ever able to make a run of their own.

Centenary was forced into 19 turnovers and forced Mississippi College into 29 on 14 steals. Freshman Derrany Thomas and Kendrick each recorded three steals for the Ladies.

Centenary will return to action on Saturday at 1 pm when it hosts Louisiana College in the Gold Dome.
