Tuesday, January 17, 2012

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary women's basketball team had five players notch double-figures in a solid 77-61 win over ETBU on Monday evening in the Gold Dome.

With the win, the Ladies improved to 5-11 under second-year head coach Kristen Davis and snapped its three-game skid. The win was also the second over the Tigers this season as they produced a seven-point victory on the road last month.

Junior Jalena Sanders recorded her second straight double-double and fifth this season, leading Centenary with 19 points and 12 rebounds. She was followed by senior Megan Daniel with 18 points and seven rebounds.

Also scoring in double-figures was junior Vashni Sharp Moore with 12 points, junior Kelly Johnstone and freshman Dio Warr with 11 points.

Sharp-Moore led the team with six assists, while freshman Ronny Kendrick dished off four.

Centenary shot 40 percent (26-65) from the floor, hit seven treys for 26 percent and finished 18-of-23 from the charity stripe for 78 percent.

The Ladies were out rebounded by ETBU, 52 to 46.

ETBU went up by nine points (13-4) after the first five minutes of play, but two treys by Daniel and back-to-back layups by Sanders put Centenary on top by one (14-13) for the first time.

Both teams exchanged leads over the next five minutes, but eventually Centenary went ahead by five (32-27) on consecutive three-pointers off the hands of Warr and Johnstone. ETBU would go on to score the final four points of the first half to earn a 33-32 lead at the break.
Centenary committed 12 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

The Ladies opened the second half on a scoring surge, posting an impressive 13-0 run during a five-minute span, sparked by Sharp-Moore's six points to take a 51-37 lead with 12:45 left. An ETBU jumper at the 12:50 mark ended the run.

Centenary then took its largest lead of the night at 17 at the 11:38 mark on a free throw by Warr. The Ladies maintained a double-digit lead until the Tigers narrowed the score to nine with six minutes left following four unanswered points.

A 7-0 run by Centenary put the Ladies up by 16 and they never looked back cruising to a win.

Centenary forced ETBU to 20 turnovers on 11 steals, led by Daniel and Kendrick each with three.

Centenary will return to action on Thursday at LeTourneau at 5:30 pm in Longview, Texas.
