Ladies Fall in Overtime, 83-79, at LETU

LONGVIEW, Texas-Senior Megan Daniel led the Centenary women's basketball team with 22 points as four Ladies found their way into double-figures, but it wasn't enough as they fell 83-79 at LeTourneau on Thursday evening.

The Ladies fell to 5-12 overall with the loss, while LeTourneau improved to 9-7.

Behind Daniel's 22 points were junior Jalena Sanders' 18 points, junior Vashni Sharp-Moore's 14 points and junior Kelly Johnstone's 12 points. Freshman Derrany Thomas added seven, while freshman Ronny Kendrick chipped in with four and Dio Warr with two.

Centenary shot 40 percent (28-70) from the floor, but only converted on 17-of-28 from the charity stripe for 61 percent.

LeTourneau out rebounded Centenary, 47 to 36. The Ladies were led on the boards by Johnstone's seven and Sanders' six.

Centenary was forced into 23 turnovers on 17 steals. LeTourneau connected on 37 points off turnovers.

Centenary grabbed a 6-0 lead to open the game on two buckets by Sanders and a layup by Kendrick. LeTourneau continued to fight and find its way back to an even 9-9 score following a 9-0 run. Centenary managed to hold the YellowJackets to their first bucket at the 16:45 mark.

Following back-to-back treys by LeTourneau, the home team grabbed its first lead at 12-11. Centenary bounced back with several three-pointers by Johnstone and Daniel to regain the lead at 27-25 with five minutes left in the opening half.

Down three after LeTourneau sank a three, Centenary used an 8-0 run to finish the half as Thomas, Johnstone, and Daniel all made contributions.

Centenary led 35-32 at the half.

A jumper by Daniel at the 16:32 mark in the second half put the Ladies up by five (41-36). LeTourneau used eight unanswered points to take a 48-44 lead midway through the half.
A technical foul by the YellowJackets warranted Daniel two free shots, which put Centenary back on top 49-48 with 10:40 left. Sharp-Moore's free throws add to the lead and give the Ladies a three-point advantage.

Up by just one, Daniel sinks a deep three from the top of the key to go ahead by four (58-54) with seven minutes remaining.

Six free throws by LeTourneau allowed them to regain the lead with 4:45 left at 62-58. Centenary wasn't able to execute at the line to even the score. Sanders 4-0 run alone tied the game at 62-62 with 3:35 left. LeTourneau responded with back-to-back layups for four straight.

Sharp-Moore found Sanders inside for two, but the YellowJackets picked away at Centenary's defense to keep a lead (68-64) with 2:33 remaining in the contest.

Kendrick drove middle for a bucket, but wasn't able to convert on a late free throw opportunity. Sanders layup from Sharp-Moore tied the game again at 68-68 with under a minute to play.

Centenary and LeTourneau took the game to overtime and the YellowJackets dominated the boards early. The Ladies trailed 75-70 with 3:05 left following a home team run of five straight.

Thomas and Sharp-Moore ended the short run, making two free throws to make it a three-point game. Up by one, LeTourneau sank two free throws and added a layup to extend the lead to five (81-76) with 1:07 left in overtime.

Down by six, Johnstone was found in the corner to sink another three to bring it within three with nine seconds left.

Centenary will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Tyler, Texas to take on UT-Tyler at 1 pm.
