Sanders Sinks Buzzer-Beater in Think Pink Action defeating LeTourneau 58 – 56

SHREVEPORT – The Centenary women’s basketball team started off strong, going on an 8 – 0 run right out of the gate.  The Ladies would make the game exciting, gaining leads, and then losing them; however in then end, the Ladies’ perseverance paid off as they would put the game away in an unforgettable fashion knocking down a last second shot to win.

Senior Megan Daniel and junior Jalena Sanders are credited with providing a thrilling ending for the Ladies.

Following the 8 – 0 run throughout the first few minutes of play was more hard work from the Ladies.  The Yellow Jackets of LeTourneau were not much of a threat until the 15 minute mark when they scored their first bucket.

From the time the Yellow Jackets got their first points on the scoreboard, throughout the next three minutes, LeTourneau began to battle its way back in the game.  A made free throw by junior Vashni Sharp Moore would get the Ladies going again.

Buckets were traded back and forth as both teams worked to create offense.  Centenary would be halted again with ten minutes left to play in the first half at 16 points, however; LeTourneau held the Ladies while they went on an 8 – 1 run to come within one point (17 – 16).

LeTourneau continued to execute plays as they trampled over the Ladies lead with four minutes to play (19 – 20).  Buckets were traded again, shifting the lead back in Centenary’s hand.  Big baskets by Sanders, Sharp Moore, and freshman Ronnie Kendrick, and Daniel put the Ladies in a good position at halftime, leading 27 – 23.

The second half opened up with a lay-up by Sanders (29 – 23) to put the Ladies up by six.  Sharp Moore extended the lead to eight with a lay-up of her own (31 – 23).  The Yellow Jackets continued to battle, making back-to-back buckets to get within two (31 – 29).  The 16:22 mark was 1 of 3 ties of the game (31 – 31) as LeTourneau kept attacking.

Both teams began to fight even harder, taking the lead and giving it up just seconds later.  LeTourneau finally began to pull away and extended their lead to 10 with 7:22 to play, their biggest lead of the game.

The Ladies didn’t back down. Little by little the Ladies regained their composure and etched their way back in the game.  Free throws by Daniel, along with a steal and free throws by Sharp Moore put the Ladies back in the game.  The Ladies were within one with 31 seconds left.

A jumper by LeTourneau put the Yellow Jackets up by three with 17 seconds left, but again, the Ladies didn’t’ back down.  Daniel knocked down a three with four seconds left to tie the game at 56.  A turnover by the Yellow Jackets put the ball back in the Ladies’ possession.  Sanders came up huge with a buzzer beating lay-up to give Ladies their 8th conference win of the season.

“I can’t say enough about how hard we played tonight and the exciting effort we showed as a team. We had a great crowd for the game tonight.  ZTA did an excellent job coordinating games and activities for the fans and when the game was on the line for us, I really feel that our great Centenary crowd gave us extra momentum” said Head Coach Kristen Davis.
