Patriots Out-rebound and Outscore Ladies in 81-71 Loss

SHREVEPORT – The Centenary women’s basketball team struggled to get in the groove today as the Ladies fell to the Patriots of UT-Tyler 81 – 71.

Junior Vashni Sharp Moore led the way for the Ladies with 23 points, followed by Senior Megan Daniel with 21. Junior Jalena Sanders performed well, securing another double-double on 15 points and 14 rebounds.

The Ladies led just once throughout the first half as the Patriots took control of the game.  UT-Tyler opened up the game with back-to-back blocks, steals, and three-pointers to keep Centenary from gaining any composure.

One of two ties of the first half came at the 16:16 mark (4-4) followed by the Ladies only lead at the 15:24 mark (6-4) on a lay-up by Sanders.  The Patriots began to surge, tying it back up (6-6) with 14 minutes to play.

From that point on, UT-Tyler’s lead increased.  The Patriots went on an 8-0 run (15-6) over the Ladies from 15:24 to 11:59 in the half.  Daniel interrupted UT-Tyler’s streak with a big three at the 10:56 mark (9-15), however the Patriots would continue to pull away as they went on a 15-3 run (13-12) over the next five minutes which would prove to be the Patriots biggest lead of the half at 19 points.

Centenary battled back to get within 11 points (26-37) with 1:13 to play.  Unfortunately UT-Tyler made a jumper and free throws to lead by 15 at half (41-26).

The second half began with a lay-up by Sanders, but again the Patriots didn’t back down.  The Ladies battled hard to hang with UT-Tyler throughout the majority of the second half, coming up big with crucial free throws by Sharp Moore and three pointers by Daniel; however, it wasn’t enough as the Patriots held onto the lead.

UT-Tyler went up by 20 points on two occasions, once at the 10:48 mark (43 – 63) and again at the 9:04 mark (46 – 66).

The remaining nine minutes were exciting as the Ladies began to create offense.  Daniel, who was 1 – 4 from the three point line in the first half began to connect, making three from deep in the second.  Her treys put the deficit within reach at 10 points at the 6:28 mark.

Centenary continued to dig deep, coming within eight points with 26 seconds to play, but the Patriots would a 10 point victory on a lay-up at the buzzer.

The Ladies shot just 31% (23 – 75) from the field.  UT-Tyler knocked down 28-64 for 44% from the field.  The Ladies were also out rebounded 61-36 for the game.

Senior Megan Daniel was honored following the game for an outstanding four years as a part of the Centenary women’s basketball program.

The Ladies will return to action Thursday, February 16 when they travel to Mississippi College.
