Gents Defeat Patriots in Dominating 81-65 Win

Gents Defeat UT-Tyler 81 – 65 in dominating home Senior Day performance

SHREVEPORT – Centenary men’s basketball team had an impressive victory as they defeated the Patriot’s of UT-Tyler 81 – 65.  Senior Maxx Nakwaasah went out in style earning a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds for his last game in the Gold Dome.

The Gents came of the gate strong.  The Patriots fought and kept the game close for the first few minutes.  Then freshman Caden Cheramie drove hard to the basket and earning his way to the free throw line.  Cheramie knocked down both free throws making it 17-9 with 11:16 on the clock.

Then at the 10:36 mark it was Nakwaasah’s turn to drive hard and make a tough, contested lay-up and that added to the Gents 17 – 2 run against the Patriots.  The Gents continued to play great defense and took the ball down the court to extend the run to 19 – 2.  It took a Gents’ foul to end their run.  UT-Tyler’s Darren Houliston was fouled and sent to the free throw line.  Houliston connected on both making it 21 – 11 and finally putting an end to the Gents’ run.

The Gents continued to play tough, team defense as the Patriots remained without a field goal from the 17:30 mark to just under the 8:00 minute mark on the clock.

Centenary entered the half up 35 – 29.

The second half, the Gents continued to take to the Patriots.  At the16:06 mark, freshman Isaiah Whitaker got himself to the line knocking down 2 of 2 free throws putting the Gents up 10 (44 – 34).

From the 11:17 mark to 7:24 on clock, the Gents went on a dominating 13 – 0 run.

Skillful defense and solid team offense propelled the Gents to an impressive 81 – 65 victory over the Patriots.

Also adding to the great scoring for the Gents was sophomore Jonathan Blount dropping in 17 points and grabbing seven boards. 

The Gents shot 41.9% from the field connecting 26 of 62.

Before the game began, the Gents honored their two seniors Maxx Nakwaasah and Matt Nichenko.

“We finished our home season with a strong weekend.  I’m very happy with how our guys came together for a solid performance to send our seniors out the right way.  I’m very proud of what Maxx and Matt have done for our program and we’ll miss them greatly” said head coach Adam Walsh.

Up next the Gents will travel to Mississippi College on Thursday, February 16, for a 7:00 pm tip off.
