Hello Centenary Ladies Gymnastics fans! My name is Sylvia Keiter and I’m a freshman on the gymnastics team.

This week we had our Mardi Gras break here in Louisiana!  That gave us a nice little break from school and gave us extra time to concentrate extra hard on our gymnastics! We also got to keep the equipment up in the Gold Dome, which helped because we got to practice in a meet like set up. At this time of the year, when we have been competing every week and working so hard for so long, it can get hard to remember to enjoy what we are doing.  We have been focusing on remembering to keep the fun going during practices and everyone has been working really hard on making every skill and routine count. An important quote we went by was the 5 Ps: “Perfect Practice Prevents Poor Performance.”  Coach Jackie has also been giving us silly goals to keep every day in practice, such as:  make three funny faces, jump for joy, make someone laugh out loud, tell someone something special about themselves, etc.

When we weren’t practicing, we got to spend a lot of time together eating in a variety of places. Several of us also went to one or more of the Mardi Gras parades during the week. For us freshies, it was our first taste of Mardi Gras and it sure was fun!  We all collected a lot of beads, though some of us cheated and went after the parade and picked them up from the side of the road!  Coach Jackie even gave us a sample of “King Cake,” which is a special cake they make for the Mardi Gras celebration and it has a miniature baby Jesus in it. Legend says the person to find the baby has to host the next Mardi Gras party.  So Christy (Chimi) will be doing the hosting next year!  It was a lot of fun to spend the whole Mardi Gras Break together as a team. It definitely brought us closer.

This was our second home meet of the season and it’s always fun to be in “the dome.” We started off on vault and had some very solid scores. We went to bars next which started out a little rough but we picked it back up. Beam was a little shaky but nothing the Ladies can’t overcome. Floor was awesome! Our ladies sure know how to get the crowd going with our sky-high tumbling and exquisite dancing! We finished off the meet with a 190.775 and a “W” for the books!

The Ladies have overcome some obstacles this season but are only getting stronger so stay tuned for more outstanding gymnastics!
