Gents, Wildcats to face off in ASC play

PINEVILLE, La. – Centenary puts its four-game win streak on the line this weekend with a three-game set at American Southwest Conference foe Louisiana College starting Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader at noon.

The Gents (14-4, 7-1) ride its second-longest win streak of the season into Louisiana College (8-6, 3-0) as both teams are off to stellar starts in ASC play. Centenary has won 10 of its last 11, its only loss to Hardin-Simmons March 3. The Wildcats hold a three-game win streak and have won five of their last six entering the weekend series.

Lance Nugent (3-0) will get the nod on the bump, boasting a 3.62 earned run average. He leads the team in innings pitched (32 1/3) and strikeouts (32). He is holding opposing batters to a .279 mark at the plate and has tossed one complete game this year.

Saturday’s game one starter is to be determined while Cole Thompson is slated to start game three. Thompson is 3-2 this year with a 2.87 ERA. In 31 1/3 innings pitched, Thompson has fanned 25 batters and holds batters to a .296 average.

The Gents offense hasn’t struggled lately, plating at least six runs in seven of the last 11 games. Kyle Morton tops the team’s batting with a .460 mark, smacking 29 hits in 63 at-bats with a team-best 21 RBIs.

Tyler Clakley holds a .431 mark (28-for-65) with 17 RBIs and a team-high 11 doubles. Ryan Gasporra’s .750 slugging percentage leads the Gents while he flirts with the .400 mark at .391 (25-for-64).  Gasporra also leads the team with 24 runs.

Jordan Marks leads LC’s offense as the only Wildcat batter topping the .400 plateau at .4-4. He leads the team in hits (21), doubles (7), RBIs (17), total bases (40), home runs (4) and slugging percentage (.769).

After the three-game set, the Gents will face off with Louisiana Tech again, this time in Ruston, March 21 at 6 p.m. before hosting the University of the Ozarks next weekend.
