PINEVILLE, La. – Jeff Schaffert’s 2-for-4, two-RBI performance led a trio of Gents with two hits and Lance Nugent stayed perfect on the mound as Centenary extended its winning streak to five games with a 4-1 American Southwest Conference baseball win over Louisiana College Friday night.

The Gents improve to 15-4 and 8-1 in league play, dropping the Wildcats to 8-7. The three-game series will conclude with a Saturday doubleheader starting at noon.

Matt Creamer(2-for-3) and Marc Martinez (2-for-4, one RBI) joined Schaffert with two hits apiece as the Gents pounded nine hits to LC’s five.

Centenary started its offensive work early, knocking out starter Justin Reed (2-2) after just three innings. Reed suffered the loss after the Gents cranked six hits, scored three runs and drew four walks with Reed on the mound.

Senior hurler Lance Nugent improved to 4-0 with another stellar outing, tossing 7 1/3 innings of four-hit ball, giving up the lone run. Taylor Henry tossed the final 1 2/3 shutout innings, surrendering just one hit.

Schaffert gave Centenary an early lead with a sacrifice fly in the first, scoring Creamer, who smacked a leadoff single through the left side then doubled to score Tyler Clakley in the third to give the Gents a 2-0 lead. Martinez singled down the left line to plate Schaffert to widen the gap.

Each squad was scoreless until the eighth when Martinez scored on a wild pitch to put the Gents on top 4-0. The Wildcats scored their only run in the bottom half on a Jordan Marks groundout to score Cole Bagbey.
