Ladies drop non-conference contest to Nicholls

SHREVEPORT – Centenary’s offensive struggles continued Wednesday afternoon as the Nicholls Colonels pitching staff held the Ladies to just two hits in a 9-1, five-inning softball contest.

The Ladies drop to 1-26 while Nicholls improves to 9-23 with the midweek non-conference game.

Reggie Salvatore and Leah Dark accounted for Centenary's two hits.

Lynsi Unruh (1-13) earned the loss with the complete-game effort, giving up 14 hits and nine runs, seven earned. Ashton Bennett (5-7) earned the win after tossing 2 2/3 innings of one-hit ball, striking out three. Katie Moulder tossed 2 1/3 innings for the Colonels, also giving up one hit.

Centenary continues its 14-game home stand Friday against the University of the Ozarks with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The two squads play another doubleheader Saturday afternoon at noon before the Ladies conclude the home stand April 17 against LSU-Alexandria at 5 p.m.

Nicholls jumped on top early with three runs in the top of the first to cap a five-hit frame, including a solo home run by Leah Andrus, her first of the year. The visitors tacked on three more in the second thanks to Ashley Ray’s seventh homer of the year to extend the lead to 6-0. Megan Gaspard’s RBI groundout pushed another run across, 7-0, after two.

Kalyn Harris scored the Ladies only run on after reaching on the first of two Nicholls fielding errors and scored from second on the second miscue.

Nicholls added two more in the fifth to push the lead to 9-1 to cap the game’s scoring.
