SHREVEPORT – Junior Jonathan Blount added to his early season accolades by being named Southern Collegiate Athlete Conference Athlete of the Week by the league office Monday.

The guard also received Tip-Off Tournament MVP honors after his great weekend, leading all scorers with 50 points in the tournament. He averaged 25.0 points per game and 3.0 assists per game to go along with 2.0 rebounds per game.

Blount made the difference in both games, contributing in different ways.

Against Goucher, Blount led all players with 27 points, shooting 9 of 22, and making 8 of 10 from the free throw line. Some of those free throws came in critical minutes at the end to keep the Gents in front.

Against host Shenandoah, Blount again led all players with 23 points, shooting 47.1 percent. He was 3 of 6 from behind the 3-point line, dishing out four assists and pulling down two rebounds.

“I’m very proud of Jonathan,” Head Coach Adam Walsh said. “He has put in the work to garner awards like this and the recent MVP award he won at the Shenandoah tournament. We hope his performance and our team’s performance set an early tone for us in the SCAC.”

Blount’s excellent weekend helped the Gents open 2-0 as they claimed the Tip-Off Championship to kick off the 2012-13 season.

The Gents continue their road trip next Saturday at Louisiana College at 3 p.m.
