Monday, January 14, 2013

SHREVEPORT, La. – Despite holding Louisiana College to 30 percent shooting on the night, the Centenary women’s basketball team dropped a hard fought 79-71 decision on Monday evening at the Gold Dome. In two meetings this season, the Ladies (3-13) have held LC (14-1) to 30 percent shooting performances.

For the second consecutive outing, Vashni Sharp-Moore posted 28 points. The point total ties a season-high and marks the third time this season she reached the total on the campaign and the ninth 20-plus point game on the campaign.

Dionecia Warr posted her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The double-double is the second straight for the San Antonio, Texas-sophomore. Brianna Edwards grabbed her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and a team-best 15 rebounds. It marks the highest board total for Edwards since a 17-rebound effort on Nov. 30 against Trinity College.

The Lady Wildcats used their depth to stretch the lead getting 32 points from their bench. LC posted 25 second chance buckets in large part to 70 rebounds, the second most surrendered by the Ladies this season. The most was 74 against LC on Nov. 19.

In a first half mostly controlled by the Maroon and White, the Ladies reached their largest lead of the game with less than six minutes until the intermission on a pair of Edwards’ free-throws.  The Lady Wildcats, which outscored Centenary 12-3 over the final seven minutes of the first half, took the lead at the 2:30 mark of the half for the first time in nearly five minutes on a 3-pointer by Natosha Gottlieb. The trey was three of Gottlieb’s team-best 12 points in the game.

The Lady Wildcats used a second 12-3 run to open the second stanza to extend their margin to 14 points three minutes into the half. LC notched its largest lead, 16 points, with 10:27 to play on a 3-pointer by Kala Chenier. Chenier finished the night with 11 points, one of three Lady Wildcats to match the mark in the game, a team-best 12 rebounds.

The Ladies would make a run at the double-digit deficit, climbing within five points with 19 ticks on the clock, but couldn’t overcome the LC margin.

Danisha Allison also posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards while Neka Jones concluded the double digit scorers with 11 points.

Centenary returns to action on Friday, Jan. 18 as the Ladies host Colorado College. Tip is slated for 6 p.m.
