Ladies, Gents fall to Trinity

MONTGOMERY, Texas – The Centenary men’s and women’s swim teams post a combined seven event victories against Trinity University, but fell to the Tigers in dual meet. The Gents were outscored 139-124 while the Ladies fell 161- 95.

Rachel Olson claimed the first victory for the Ladies with a time of 2:15.57 in the women’s 200-yard individual medley. Hayley Schneider finished just behind her teammate in second with a time of 2:18.19. Olsen also tallied a third place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.67.

The Ladies’ 400-yard freestyle teams grabbed the top two spots as the team of Laura Huning, Schneider, Kayla Thornhill and Olsen recorded a time of 3:45.55 to nip teammates Kathlyn Rivers, Daniela Ruelas, Julie Hughes and Christy Wolterman’s time of 4:03.47.

Wolterman tallied a time of 11:31.37 to claim the win in the 1,000-yard freestyle while teammate Raquel Candal finished second with a time of 11:46.14. Wolterman, a Sugar Land, Texas, native also finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:35.87.

Huning and Rivers each claimed wins for the Ladies. Huning, a Southlake, Texas, native, posted a time of 59.66 in the 100-yard butterfly while Rivers, a product of Elgin, Texas, tallied a time of 2:16.69 in the 200-yard backstroke.  

Austin Butler picked up his first of three event wins with a victory in the men’s 50-yard freestyle. Later in the day, the Baton Rouge, La., native claimed wins for the Gents in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.51) and 100-yard freestlye (48.56).

Matthew Pittman logged a third victory for the Gents besting Trinity’s Sean Fronczak in the men’s 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:25.75. Pittman, a native of Plano, Texas, also recorded a pair second place finishes in the men’s 500-yard freestyle (5:00.87) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.70).

Ross Olivier garnered a pair of victories for the Gents along with a second place finish. The New Iberia, La., product posted a time of 54.05 in the men’s 100-yard backstroke – besting teammates Michael Schwandt (54.89) and Andrew Borel (55.73) who finished second and third respectively. Olivier’s second event win came in the 200-yard backstroke where he recorded a time of 2:00.59. Schwandt finished third in the event with a time of 2:03.21. Olivier’s lone second place result came in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:03.20.

Michelle Gaubert finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.88 while Hughes garnered a time of 5:06.84 in the 400-yard individual medley to finish third and finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:13.69 to best Huning’s time of 2:18.62 in third. Thornhill also logged a third place finish for the Ladies with a time of 2:03.26 in the 200-yard freestyle.

Borel also logged a third place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.03.

Beau Montgomery posted a time of 55.44 for second place in the 100-yard butterfly while Christopher Sullivan finished third with a time of 58.44. Sullivan also entered a second place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:12.18.

Arash Ataei picked up a two, third place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.88) and 200-yard butterfly (2:15.28)

The Gents’ 400-yard freestyle relay finished second as the team of  Ataei, Borel, Schwandt and Collin Baker posted a time of 3:19.86.  Baker also finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:49.50.

The Centenary swim teams return to action on Saturday, Jan. 26 as the squads host Southwestern University. The dual meet begins at 11 a.m. in the Centenary Fitness Center.
