GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Centenary men’s basketball picked up a 68-58 road win against Southwestern on Friday evening to move to 8-11 overall and 4-7 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The win snapped a four-game skid for the Gents.

The Black and Gold fall to 8-12 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

Jonathan Blount led the way for the Maroon and White with 16 points marking his 16th contest in double figures. Brett Bell paced the Gents on the glass with 10 rebounds – his third double figure, rebound effort of the season.

Centenary went 21-for-50 from the field in the victory, including hitting 44.4 percent from behind the arc.

The Gents, who never trailed in the first half, opened the contest on a 14-6 run led by as many as 13 points through the first 12 minutes of the contest. The Pirates made a run nipping the deficit to within five points with four minutes to play, but the Gents controlled the surge taking a six-point advantage into the locker room.

SU, which opened the second half the way they closed the first chipping away at the Gents’ deficit, gained its first lead of the game at 40-39 at the 13:49 mark on a 3-pointer by Eric Garza.

However, the Pirates’ lead was short lived as Bell scored the next two Centenary baskets to place the Maroon and White in front 43-40 with less than 12 minutes to play.

The two squads exchanged baskets over the next couple of minutes with the score being knotted at 47-all with 9:37 to play on an Adrian Johnson 3-pointer, but JaColby Hardin-Crawford would hit the front end of a pair of free throws to put the Gents back on top for good.

Caden Cheramie hit a pair of free throws with less than two minutes to play to give the Maroon and White its second double figure lead of the game at 62-52. Cheramie finished the night with 6 points.

The Gents hit 6-of-8 free throws over the final two minutes to secure the win and finished the night shooting 68.8 percent for the game. Jairus Browning connected on 3-of-4 down the stretch and even added a layup as time expired to complete his 7-point night. Bell also hit 1-of-2 shots from the charity stripe down the stretch.

Nicholas Atiee led Southwestern in scoring off the bench with 12 points. The Pirate starters were held in check combing for 24 points in the contest.

Centenary returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 3 at Trinity. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
