Gents open season against East Texas Baptist

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Centenary baseball team is set to open the 2013 season as the Gents travel to McKinney, Texas for a three-day event beginning on Friday, Feb. 8 against East Texas Baptist. First pitch versus the Tigers is set for 11 a.m.

The Maroon and White is set to square off with in-state foe Louisiana College on Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by the weekend finale against Williamette (Ore.) University on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Gents were tabbed second in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference on earlier this spring by the conference’s head coaches. Centenary picked up a pair of the conference’s five first-place votes for a total of 20 points. Trinity was tabbed as the preseason favorite edging the Maroon and White with the remaining first-place nods.

Centenary, which enters its first season in the SCAC, finished the 2012 season with a record of 24-15 in its final campaign in the American Southwest Conference.

Tyler Clakley returns at the top bat from a season ago. The senior led the Gents at the dish batting .392 on the season. The Tyler, Texas, native posted a team-best 56 hits, including 35 RBI – second behind Kyle Morton’s 39 runs driven in.

Fellow senior Ryan Gasporra joins Clakley among the hitting leaders from a season ago. Gasporra posted a .360 clip with the plate which stood third on the team. The Palm Dale, Calif., product also drove in 33 runs and led the squad with 17 doubles in 2012.

Taylor Henry and Cole Thompson return as the top arms for the Gents on the campaign. The duo each logged 4 wins on the bump last season tying for second on the team behind Lance Nugent’s season-best 7 victories.

Henry, a native of Bossier City, La., recorded a 3.97 ERA in a team-high 22 appearances last season. The sophomore fanned 32 batters in 47.2 innings for the Gents. The inning total and strikeouts each ranked third on the squad.

Thompson totaled 58.1 innings on the bump which ranked second on the team. The senior garnered 43 Ks –second most on the season – with a 4.94 ERA in 13 appearances. The Plano, Texas, hurler tied for the team lead with three complete outings for the Gents.

Centenary opens the home slate on Tuesday, Feb. 12 in a doubleheader against Jarvis Christian. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
