Long ball aids Gents in extra inning, win over nationally-ranked Trinity

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A pair of homeruns lead the Centenary baseball team to a 14-12 win over No. 2/3 Trinity on Friday to extend its advantage in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action. The Gents are 21-7 overall and 13-3 in league play. Trinity falls to 24-7 and 9-5.

Marc Martinez ripped a two-run homer in the 11th inning followed by a solo dinger by Zachary Stephenson in the frame.  The pair of homeruns marked the first of the season for the duo and joined Craig Littleman’s – also his first of the season that came in the fifth.

The two long balls answered a seven-run, ninth inning by TU that erased an 11-4 Gents’ lead to force the contest into extra innings.

Grady Flournoy (2-2) earned the win on the mound for the Maroon and White. Flournoy fanned two batters and surrendered six hits in his 2.2 innings of relief work.

Ryan Gasporra and Tyler Clakley each tallied three hits each in the contest to pace the Gents. Littleman, Jemari James and Stephenson added to the multiple hit totals for the Maroon and White with two hits apiece.

As a squad, Centenary recorded 14 hits on the day against nine Tiger hurlers.

Littleman, James, Martinez and Christian Sebastien each drove in multiple runs in the affair to aid the Gents’ output.

After jumping out to a 6-3 lead after the first five innings, the Gents added five runs over the seventh and eighth inning to take an 11-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. The Tigers logged nine of their 23 hits in the ninth to knot the contest at 11-all.

Troy Ward pitched the final 1.2 innings in his first loss of the season.

Kevin Francke led TU with four hits on the day, including a two-run homer in the third inning.

Centenary returns to action on Friday, Apr. 5 with a doubleheader at the University of Texas at Tyler.
