TYLER, Texas – The No. 26 Centenary baseball team had its five-game win streak snapped on Friday evening as the Gents (21-8) fell 7-4 at No. 11 University of Texas at Tyler. UT-Tyler improves to 24-7 overall.

The two squads recorded 13 hits each in the tilt between nationally-ranked teams, but three runs in the latter half of the contest sealed the decision for the Patriots.

After a 4-all affair after the first inning, Texas-Tyler plated two runs in the fifth to take a two-run advantage. Derrick Smith plated the go-ahead run with an RBI single to score T.J. Martin. Cayden Cunniff scored one batter on a William Allen sacrifice fly to left field.

Craig Littleman went 4-for-5 at the dish with a RBI to lead a quartet of Gents with multiple hits. Tyler Clakley added three hits and a RBI with two hits each coming from Marc Martinez and Zachary Stephenson. Martinez added a pair of RBI.

The Blue and Orange added an insurance run in the seventh on a Martin sac fly that placed Kevan House.

Layton Tromba (5-3) took the loss on the mound pitching 4.1 innings. The Bossier City, La., sophomore allowed six runs – five earned – while giving up all of the Patriots hits. Grady Flournoy tossed the remaining 3.2 innings allowing one run in the relief effort. The duo combined for four strikeouts and three walks.

Chance Cotton (7-2) tossed 6.0 innings in the win surrendering nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Matt Sheppard and Derek Miller combined for the final three innings of work allowing just four hits and totaling three strikeouts.

The Maroon and White garnered five of its hits in the first trip to the plate as Clakley, Littleman and Martinez each provided RBI singles to get the scoring started.

Texas –Tyler answered in the bottom half of the frame in part to a House two-run homerun to pull the Patriots within a run. Martin scooted across the dish for the final run of the frame to knot the contest.

Smith and Martin paced UTT at the plate with three hits each while Same Lane and Chris Back added a pair of hits apiece in the win.

The two squads start a doubleheader at 2 p.m. tomorrow to settle the three-game series.
