CONWAY, Ark. – The Centenary women’s volleyball team opened the 2013 season with five-set win over (3-2) over Lyon in the first match of the Hendrix Labor Day Tournament. The Ladies (1-1) drew a split on the opening day following 3-0 to Williams Baptist (26-28, 18-25, 24-26) in the finale of the first day’s action.

In the victory, the Maroon and White battled back from two sets down (24-26, 16-25) to claim the opening match win. Shreveport’s Team rattled 25-19, 25-22 and 15-10 victories to earn the opening match decision.

Sarah Irons and Sarah Sumner led the squad with 17 and 11 kills respectively while Beth Nuttall totaled a team-best 29 assists in the effort. Irons finished the night with 29 total kills in the two matches to lead the way for the Ladies. Sumner finished just one kill shy of back-to-back, double-digit kill performances with nine against WBU in the finale.

Nuttall dished out 56 total assists on the day to lead the Maroon and White.

Brooke Bahlinger totaled 10 kills in the two outings to sit third on the team in kills through the first day.

Centenary returns to action on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 10 a.m. against Belhaven University before closing the tournament at Noon against host Hendrix.
