SHREVEPORT, La. – The Centenary men’s basketball team knocked off cross-town foe Louisiana State University-Shreveport 88-84 in the season opener on Tuesday evening. The victory is the second in the series for the Gents against its southern neighbor. The loss moves the Pilots to 1-4 on the season.

“It was a good start for our three-game week,” said head coach Adam Walsh. “Getting a win was nice, because we had to learn how to learn how to handle the pressure since we will be up against similar opponents the remainder of the week. Tonight was a good piece to build on. We played well because we focused on competing in practice and now we have to compete for the rest of the week.”

Leading 42-31 at the half, the Pilots pressed their advantage out to six points, 60-54, with just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest. The Gents answered with a 14-6 run to claim its first lead of the half at 68-66 on three-pointer by Cheramie.

Centenary continued to the press the tempo and extended its lead to 81-73 on the backend of a pair of free throws by Jarius Browning with less than a minute left in the outing. The lead was the largest of contest for the Gents.

The Maroon and White hit nine of its final 10 shots from the charity stripe to ice the contest.

The Gents shot 50-percent from the floor and were 23-28 (82.1) from the line. LSUS was 46-percent from the field on the evening.

Brandon Davis paced the Blue and Gold with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Will Nelson scored 28 points with 15 points from Joseph James.

Centenary returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 21, as the Gents host East Texas Baptist. Tip is slated for 7 p.m.
